About the Opportunity


The Chief of Police reports to the City Manager and serves as an important member of the City’s executive management team. The Chief will be responsible for maintaining an effective relationship with other operating departments, elected officials, the public, and other key stakeholder groups. The Police Chief will be instrumental in partnering with other City departments to help build Gainesville into a top-ten mid-size city.

  • Is able to build strong teams within the department, with other departments, with other governmental agencies, and within the community; and builds consensus among the teams.

  • Embraces diversity both within the organization and in the community.

  • Has demonstrated success in a complex environment.

  • Works well in an organized labor environment.


Experience and Education:


Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with major course work in law enforcement, criminal justice, criminology or related field, preferably supplemented by a Master’s degree; and eight (8) years experience at the Command Level of Police Captain or higher.  FBI National Academy Training, or an equivalent level of training, may substitute for up to one year of education at the undergraduate level.



Compensation and Benefits:


The City of Gainesville has established a salary range for this position of $106,506 - $165,085 annually.
