The City of DeKalb, Illinois is located in a university community and the Fire Department serves a population of approximately 16,000 students and 47,000 residents. The Department has an ISO Rating of 2 with a primary response area of 15 square miles and serves an additional 40 square miles by contract to the DeKalb Fire Protection District. In 2017, the DeKalb Fire Department responded to 5,573 requests for emergency service of which 74% were medical calls. The Fire Department is comprised of 57 full-time sworn employees including 3 Administrative Chiefs and 3 civilian employees.

 

The City of DeKalb is located 60 miles west of Chicago and 30 miles southeast of Rockford. We are the home of the second largest university in the State of Illinois – Northern Illinois University.

 

 

Minimum Requirements at time of application:

  • At least 21 years of age, but less than 35 years of age prior to taking any test leading to employment as a Firefighter/Paramedic for the City of DeKalb. Proof of birth date is required. Except applicants having previous full time employment with an Illinois Fire Department or Fire Protection District.

  • State of Illinois (IDPH) Paramedic License (EMT-P). Please Note: The EMT-P requirement may be satisfied by a letter issued by an accredited EMT-P training and certification program indicating that at the time of application, the applicant is a student in good standing, with tuition paid in full, who is expected to graduate the EMT-P program with a grade of at least 80%, within the next 3 months. Applicants must have EMT-P status at time of hire, to be eligible for hiring.

  • Certified as a Basic Operations Firefighter (Firefighter II) or Advanced Technician Firefighter (Firefighter III) by the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office.

  • Valid Driver’s License.

  • Minimum of High School diploma or equivalent.

 

Residency:

 

Residency requirement after 15 months of employment
