Public Safety Telecommunicators perform the full range of dispatching public safety personnel and equipment during an emergency situation.  Public Safety Telecommunicator receive routine and emergency calls and transmit/receive messages via radio, 9-1-1 emergency phone lines and various computer systems.

The Emergency Communications Center operates on a 7-day, 24-hour schedule basis and if selected you will work a variety of shifts along with an opportunity for overtime.

Functions of the position include:

  • Answer incoming 911 and non-emergency phone calls and take appropriate action to handle call

  • Complete Computer Aided Dispatch terminal entry on incidents, alarms, or calls for service

  • Dispatch appropriate emergency police, fire, and rescue units to calls for service, prioritizing each incident, and under varied conditions using standard operating procedures

  • Monitor the status of all committed fire, police, and rescue units and provide supplemental information to units as it becomes available and/or necessary

  • Monitor, receive, enter and make inquiries utilizing various sophisticated public safety computer systems for a variety of law enforcement and fire related information

  • Handle emergency medical requests utilizing an emergency medical dispatch protocol computer system

  • Monitor citywide talk group after hours to respond to incoming transmissions from field personnel

  • Handle incoming alarms and monitor the emergency system frequency

  • Process and handle all calls to certain agencies regarding disaster situations or hazardous material incidents


Candidates must meet and submit the following required documentation by the application deadline of May 9, 2018.



Must attach a copy of your high school diploma or G.E.D to your application
Schedule and satisfactorily pass the written test
Be able to successfully complete a Data Entry/Typing skills test
Be able to satisfactorily pass a background investigation to determine suitability for the position. Investigation includes a criminal history record check.
Be able to satisfactorily pass a drug screen test and hearing test
Be able to satisfactorily pass a psychological examination
Candidates chosen for the position must participate an observation session to gain a better understanding of the position.
