Elk Grove Village, Illinois, (pop. 33,127), a strategically located, progressive community that is home to the largest consolidated business park in North America, is seeking dynamic, detailed and customer service oriented candidates for the position of Fire Inspector.  Elk Grove Village is located in Cook and DuPage Counties adjacent to O’Hare International Airport, and is home to approximately 3,600 businesses located in its 5.4 square mile Business Park. Under the direction of the Supervisor of Inspectional Services Division, the Fire Inspector performs fire inspections of all industrial, commercial, multi family dwelling units and institutional structures. This position also ensures that all structures are pre-fire plan surveyed.  Additionally, the Fire Inspector submits fire protection reports/analyses and recommendations that will enhance the public’s and firefighter safety as it relates to the occupancy and maintenance of structures within the Village.  This position is further challenged to perform multiple fire protection roles, which are intended to reduce the number and severity of fires to protect the public and fire suppression forces.


Education, Experience, and Training:

  • A Degree in Fire Science or Fire Technology, or equivalent, is required;

  • Three or more years experience in industrial fire inspections preferred, or any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

  • Experience conducting fire inspections in industrial structures with special knowledge and skills in special industrial hazards and risks preferred.

  • Proficiency in software applications, databases, spreadsheets and word processing required.

License and Certification:

  • Office of State Marshal certified Fire Prevention Officer I required.

  • Must have a valid Illinois Driver’s License with a safe driving record.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


Considerable knowledge and skill in the enforcement and interpretation of the IBC, IFC and NFPA, codes and standards; of computers and related software, including data entry on both a desktop and electronic tablet; writing technical reports; utilizing the GIS system; fire protection system design, installation and maintenance; in fire and explosion causes; in reading and interpreting building plans; in interpreting fire codes and requirements; in enforcing code and standards with firmness and tact; in maintaining accurate records; in dealing with the public; in identifying hazards and documenting pre-fire plan surveys; in effective management of time, scheduling of work and use of resources.



40 hours/week





$28.62 to $38.16/hour
