The LEAD Public Safety Officer will be responsible for leading staff on the evening shift. They will be ensuring a safe and secure working environment for employees, patients, and visitors who work and visit the Elmhurst Hospital's outpatient and inpatient care areas, campus buildings, its surrounding property, and parking areas.



Essential Functions:

  • Serve as the LEAD evening shift Public Safety Officer

  • Make patrols of the organization's buildings, grounds, and public areas as a visible deterrent to criminal activity

  • Recognize, report, and investigate criminal and non-criminal incidents  Take immediate and appropriate action to report, document, and correct.

  • Enforce organization's policies pertaining to restricted areas, employees, visitors, patients, and federal, state, and local laws

  • Maintain pedestrian and vehicular traffic control inside the organization's buildings and outside on the grounds and parking areas

  • Understands and demonstrates the proper guidelines for the Use of Force

  • Maintains professional competency by successful completion of all annual departmental training (i.e., CPR, First Aid, Self Defensive, CPI, and Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response team, and annual physical and respiratory exams)

  • Physical job tasks include; able to perform frequent standing/walking; occasional lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling up to 50 lbs; seldom lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling of more than 101 lbs; seldom stooping, kneeling, crouching, twisting, bending, reaching, and climbing; frequent walking up and down stairs during routine patrols; may require running or running up and down stairs; occasional repetitive use of hands; vehicle operation; possible exposure to heat/cold and infectious diseases and hazardous materials; able to perform all physical job tasks while wearing full face respirator and Saratoga brand chemical suit


Additional Functions:

  • Assist patients, visitors, and employees as requested

  • Maintain confidentiality of all patients

  • Maintain confidentiality of all incident reports and occurrences

  • Prevent unauthorized removal of organizational property

  • Responsible for any other duties which may be assigned by a department Supervisor or hospital management



  • Minimum age is 21

  • Ability to produce a concise, accurate, well-written report

  • Excellent verbal communication skills

  • Good typing skills of at least 25 WPM

  • Education - High School Education or Equivalent (Diploma or GED)

  • Experience - LEAD Public Safety experience in a Hospital/HealthCare facility


Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Valid State of Illinois Drivers License (upon hire)

  • Valid FOID (Firearm Owners Identification Card; upon hire)

  • CPR issued by American Heart Association (within 6 months of hire)

  • IAHSS Security Officer Certification (within 12 months oh hire)



A Criminal Background Check and Drivers License Check will be performed initially as part of pre-employment screening and annually thereafter. Successful completion of the initial and annual respiratory physical examination as set forth by the standards of Elmhurst Hospital.
