The Village of Lake Zurich has an immediate need for qualified candidates for the position of Telecommunicator. Telecommunicators serve as the central coordination point between emergency services and the public. They receive and respond to 911 calls or other electronic requests for emergency assistance, including law enforcement, fire, medical, and other emergency/non-emergency services.  Lake Zurich PSAP provides 24/7 service for Lake Zurich Police/Fire, Kildeer Police, Hawthorn Woods Police, Island Lake Police, Tower Lakes Police and Wauconda Police/Fire.




  • Receives complaints from public concerning emergencies and non-emergencies.

  • Broadcasts orders to appropriate personnel in vicinity to investigate complaints, and relays instructions or questions from remote units.

  • Solicits information to determine appropriate resources needed to respond to requests for service.

  • Monitors status of dispatched assignments and units and coordinates all police, fire, EMS, public works and other emergency requests, relaying instructions to radio units concerned.

  • Enters and retrieves information using computer aided dispatch system (CAD).

  • Maintains required certifications to provide Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD).

  • Receive requests for information regarding vehicle registration, driving records, warrants and additional data in accordance with LEADS policies, procedures and guidelines. 

  • Maintains file records and messages.

  • Monitors burglar and fire alarm systems to detect illegal entry and fires at businesses and residences.




The starting salary for this position is $25.06 - $26.12 per hour DOQ

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.

  • Must be able to work an 8 to 12 hour shift, weekends and holidays.

  • Ability to split ear and multitask on a regular basis.

  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment.

  • Ability to prioritize a large call volume and disseminate the information accurately and in a timely manner during stressful situations. 

  • Must be able to pass the applicant testing, background investigation, medical exam, hearing test and drug screening.

  • Must be able to accurately type 40 words per minute with 98% accuracy.

  • Must possess excellent verbal, written and communication skills.

  • Must exercise good professional judgment.

  • Must be self-motivated and require little direct supervision.

  • High degree of professionalism and confidentiality.

  • Any form of Law, Fire, or EMS experience desirable.



  • Ability to hear and speak to exchange information on the phone, radio or in person.

  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate office equipment.

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to read computer screens and various documents.

  • Ability to visually observe multiple monitors, to include video surveillance, mapping and weather.

  • Ambulatory to serve the public at a service counter/window and to perform prisoner checks through a viewing window and/or cell doors.
