The City of McHenry/NERCOM has a full time employment opportunity for the position of Telecommunicator. Previous experience as a Telecommunicator within the last three years preferred. 

We are seeking persons of high moral character with a strong work ethic and unwavering commitment to teamwork. Telecommunicators work in a fast paced often stressful environment with a high level of professional responsibility. This position is responsible for answering and dispatching 911 emergency calls, collecting vital information from caller, communicating with police, fire and EMS in the field, answering non-emergency calls, along with a variety of other responsibilities. NERCOM services numerous police and fire/rescue agencies.  We are committed to offering the highest level of services in the industry.

Job Requirements:

  • Experience as a telecommunicator handling police, fire, and EMS preferred.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Possess the ability to listen, comprehend the caller, follow established protocol, and make decisions affecting public safety.

  • Strong planning and multi-tasking skills. Effectively answer phones, communicate with caller to collect information, dispatch to police/fire/EMS, enter data into system all simultaneously.

  • Possess the ability to produce written reports, logs, and records.

  • Typing proficiency of 35 words per minute.

  • General computer skills in a Windows environment.

  • Possess the ability to read, understand and interpret maps, and receive and give directions using maps.

  • The ability to work well under pressure and effectively manage stress, and maintain emotional balance under rapidly changing situations.

  • This is a 24/7 center and shift-work, weekends, and holidays are required.

  • Telecommunicator work 12 hour shifts.

  • The ability to provide excellent customer service including the ability to effectively communicate with callers who may be angry, argumentative or disagreeable.

  • Understand and comply with all department procedures, rules, and regulations.

  • Have never been convicted of a felony.

  • Bi-lingual skills a plus.

  • Experience working with police/fire/EMS in emergency services is strongly preferred.

  • Preference will be given to candidates who hold EMD certification and have work experience with Tri-Tech software.

  • Must pass extensive background investigation and pre-employment physical.

  • During Probationary period

    • Become certified on LEADS/NCIC Law Enforcement Agencies Data System/National Crime Information Center computer system

    • Pass ILETTS (Illinois Law Enforcement Telecommunicator Training School (or equivalent)

    • EMD Certification


The starting annualized base salary for this position is $51,925.97

(Step 1 effective May 1, 2018)


Candidates with previous related experience may be hired into an advanced step in the pay matrix as detailed in the collective bargaining agreement. This position is not exempt under the FLSA.
