Job Description:


Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe, reliable, and efficient commuter service.


The Metra Police Department serves and protects commuters using the Metra system and protects Metra's property. The mission of the Metra Police is to safeguard the lives and property of the people they serve, to reduce the incidence and fear of crime and enhance public safety. Metra Police work to expedite issues withy the commuting public and handle vehicle accidents and trespasser incidents on Metra railroad and property. Metra Police actively engage and work with first responders as well as local, state, and federal agencies during service disruptions and partner with these agencies on security planning. Their work ensures the safety of Metra's passengers and employees and reduces train delays.


Reporting to the Police Ops Commander, these positions monitor the Metra system via surveillance cameras, radio communications, computer systems, and other sources; report and coordinate responses to real-time observations and information received on situations impacting public safety; and prepare activity reports. Monitor, assess, and act on communications and information obtained from a variety of sources regarding crimes in progress, emergency events, severe weather, special events, emergencies and/or other significant local, national, and international incidents that may impact the Metra system or public safety. Monitor and use available video camera networks, evaluate video information, and provide actionable law enforcement level notifications related to observations. Monitor news media and other communications to keep abreast of developing or ongoing emergencies, major incidents, and/or other significant events. Maintained a detailed log of activities, observations, actions, and notifications. Testify in court regarding criminal activities witnessed, observed or recorded on video equipment. Employees may perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization. This position is subject to random drug and/or alcohol testing.


Candidates can expect salary offers that range from the minimum to the mid-point of the salary range. Metra provides full pay ranges so candidate can consider their growth potential.


Metra is a railroad employer subject to the provisions of the Railroad Retirement Tax Act, not the Social Security Administration.



Job Requirements:

  1. High school diploma or GED.

  2. In addition to #1 above, must have two (2) years of experience in public safety, communications, video technology, or related experience.

  3. Must submit to and pass a comprehensive Metra Police Department background check, including fingerprints and a credit check.

  4. Basic knowledge of public safety principles.

  5. Good observation skills.

  6. Good verbal and written communication skills.

  7. Basic computer skills.

  8. Ability to analyze situations, discern patterns, and respond appropriately under strict time constraints.

  9. Ability to clearly translate visual observations into actionable verbal communications while under stress.

  10. Ability to direct emergency operations in a calm and efficient manner.

  11. Ability to work independently and to stay focused and alert.

  12. Ability to manage highly confidential information.

  13. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and must be willing to travel within and outside Metra's 6-county region.

  14. Ability to stand, walk, and/or sit, for extended periods of time.

  15. Hearing/Visual acuity, far/near, depth perception, field of vision, color vision.

  16. Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.

  17. Must be available on-call 24-hours/day, 7 days/week, 365 days/year, including weekends and holidays.

  18. Subject to recall in response to public safety emergencies.
