The Village of Mundelein, Illinois is seeking applications from qualified individuals for the position of Chief of Police.  This vacancy has been created by the retirement of the incumbent after more than 20 years in this position.  The salary for this position is competitive and comparable with communities in the area.  Mundelein is a culturally and ethnically diverse suburb of Chicago with over 31,000 residents.  Mundelein is geographically situated approximately 40 miles northwest from Chicago’s “loop”, five miles west of Interstate 94, and 20 miles north of O'Hare airport.  Four major state highways serve Mundelein: Route 60, Route 45, Route 176 and Route 83 encompassing a 10 square mile land area. 


The Mundelein Police Department is nationally accredited and has an authorized strength of 54 sworn officers and a support staff of 19 civilians.  The Command Staff consists of the Chief, two Deputy Chiefs, three Commanders, and five Sergeants. Since 1992 when the current Police Chief was hired, the Department has won two International Association of Chiefs of Police Community Policing Awards and dozens of other awards and participated in the Enhanced Police Response to Victims Program through the US DOJ and IACP.  The department philosophy is summed up in the Mission and Values Statement which reads: "The Mundelein Police Department is in existence to provide the highest quality of police service which requires citizen involvement in the identification and solution of problems within the community.  The Mundelein Police Department will continue to improve the "quality-of-life" through enhanced police services, while protecting the constitutional rights of all citizens." 


The Mundelein Police Department is a member of the Lake County Metropolitan Enforcement Group, Lake County Major Crime Task Force, Lake County Gang Task Force, Ruse Burglary Task Force, and FBI Safe Streets Task Force.


The current Police Department budget is $8,850,000.  Patrol officers are represented under a collective bargaining agreement.  The positions of Commander and Deputy Chief are exempt positions filled by the Chief of Police with the concurrence of the Village Administrator.


Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) with major course work in police or public administration or equivalent academic field and should have a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible municipal police experience including a minimum of five years of experience in a responsible command-level position in a similarly sized municipal police department.  Successful completion of the FBI National Academy, the Northwestern University Staff and Command Program, or similar nationally recognized program of advanced management training is desired.  Police Chief certification through the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police or similar recognized program.  Candidates must possess excellent written and oral communication skills; strong leadership skills; ability to work effectively with local elected and appointed officials, media, and community representatives; a commitment to the principles of community-oriented policing; and the ability to maintain a high-level of public visibility and involvement in an ethnically diverse community.
