The Village of River Grove, Illinois is currently accepting applications for the position of part-time police officer that are Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board certified. Part-time police officers will be employed in accordance with 65 ILCS 5/3.1-30-21, and shall be considered at will employees.

 

 

Nature of Work:

 

This is responsible part time law enforcement work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of state and local laws and ordinances.

 

Work involves responsibility for the protection of life and property and the enforcement of laws and ordinances on an assigned shift. An employee of this class is primarily assigned to traffic control, to assisting full time police officers, but may be assigned to other specialized departmental activity. Work involves an element of personal danger in the pursuit of duties. The employee is frequently exposed to life threatening situations. Officers must exercise independent judgment in meeting both routine and emergency situations. A significant portion of time involves public contact where discretion and tact is to be conscientiously exercised. Assignments and instructions are received in general terms from a superior officer reviews work methods and results through reports, observations, and discussions. Employee must also have the ability to perform related duties as assigned.

 

 

Examples of Essential Job Functions:

 

Officers who do not meet the certification requirements of the Illinois Local Government Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board are not authorized to perform all of the essential functions.

  • Facilitates the movement of people and vehicles, including:

    • Enforcement of all traffic regulations

    • Controls and redirects traffic by setting up diversion devices and using hand signals or lights in congested areas and scenes of emergency or danger

    • Guides citizens across busy streets

    • Promotes traffic safety

    • Assists stranded motorists

    • Enforces parking restrictions

    • Controls crowds

    • Prevents the blockage of sidewalks, streets, and other public accesses

  • Provides effective and efficient customer service; promotes and maintains responsive community relations

  • Assists full time police officers, including:

    • Emergency scenes and in the arrest and booking process

    • Serves as security at various public events

    • Completes standard forms and writes narrative reports

    • Provides foot patrol in designated areas

  • Transportation, including:

    • Prisoners to bond court hearings

    • Appears in court and obtains bond amount

    • Delivers and picks up various items to designated points including court sheets, tickets, warrants, and evidence

    • Animals to pound

 

Requirements of Work:

  • Graduation from high school or GED supplemented by state-approved course of law enforcement training for part time /reserve police officers or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills

  • Knowledge of applicable state and law statutes and ordinances which the officer is charged with enforcing

  • Knowledge of police rules and regulations and standard operating procedures

  • Knowledge of the geography of the Village and location of important buildings

  • Ability to handle sensitive public contacts and to deal tactfully and courteously but firmly with the public

  • Ability to distinguish confidential material and apply departmental standards for security and privacy

  • Ability to testify in court and similar proceedings

  • Ability to analyze situations and adapt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances

  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instruction and prepare clear, comprehensive reports

  • Ability to meet such physical requirements as may be established

  • Ability to exercise sound, independent judgment and to render objective decisions in the application of laws and ordinances

  • Ability to apply techniques of self-defense and use necessary force to apprehend and restrain violent or hostile individuals

  • Ability to operate a computer terminal

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with others

  • Skill in the use of firearms, other law enforcement equipment, and the operation of motor vehicles

 

Necessary Special Requirements:

  • Valid Illinois Driverís License

  • Certification as a part time/reserve police officer by the Illinois Local Government Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board

  • All employees of the Village of River Grove are considered at will employees
