HELP WANTED PART-TIME

CROSSING GUARD/COMMUNITY SERVICE OFFICER

WINNETKA POLICE DEPARTMENT

 

 

Applications are being accepted for the position of

Crossing Guard/Community Service Officer.

 

The successful candidate will assist school-aged children in crossing the street at assigned intersections throughout the school year, and will also patrol the Village to enforce Village and Park District ordinances, and provide support for law enforcement functions not requiring the use of sworn officers.

 

The position requires the ability to safely cross elementary school students in cross walks; stand for long periods of time while holding a stop sign in the air in a position visible to drivers; use verbal and non-verbal signals to keep the attention of pedestrians and drivers; maintain control of pedestrians in crosswalks, monitor vehicles parked in permit or time restricted areas; assist sworn officers with traffic control at scenes of accidents, fires and special events; and perform courier service and other duties as needed.  The selection process includes application, interview, stringent background check and pre-employment medical physical.

 

 

Minimum requirements:

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Some knowledge of general traffic safety hazards

  • Ability to use verbal and non-verbal signals to keep the attention of pedestrians and drivers

  • Some familiarity with police terminology, regulations and procedures, local ordinances and state statutes or the ability to learn and apply same

  • Speak, legibly write and read the English language

  • Possess effective audio-visual discrimination and perception to make quick and accurate observations; color vision adequate to identify red, green and yellow

  • Hearing sufficient to detect sirens, alarms, telephone and other communications devices

 

The position is located within a highly structured organization.  Strenuous exertion is sometimes required to provide services in emergency, adverse, unpleasant, or unusual situations, in all weather conditions and at all hours of the day. 

 

Prior experience preferred.

 

This is a part-time uniformed civilian position that requires 20 - 25 hours per week.

 

Hourly wage negotiable DOQ.
