The Village of Winnetka seeks a part-time Crossing Guard to assist school-aged youth in crossing the street at assigned intersections during the school year. The preferred candidate will also work as a part-time Community Service Officer enforcing Village and Park District ordinances, and provide support for law enforcement functions not requiring the use of sworn officers.



Desired Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent


Crossing Guard Requirements:

  • Safely cross elementary students in cross walks

  • Stand for long periods of time while holding a stop sign in the air in a position visible to drivers

  • Use verbal and non-verbal signals to keep the attention of pedestrians and drivers

  • Maintain control of pedestrians in crosswalks

  • Exercise good judgment and sound decision making

  • Provide excellent customer service while communicating with parents, young adults, children and members of the public


Community Service Officer Requirements:

  • Monitor vehicles parked in permit or time restricted areas

  • Assist sworn officers with traffic control at scenes of accidents, fires and special events

  • Respond to and investigate calls for assistance with animal-related problems

  • Appear as a witness and testify in court

  • Perform courier service and other duties for the Department


The Part-time Crossing Guard works outdoors 3-4 hours per day, 5 days a week in split shifts daily, depending on the school schedule and may be extended in the event of an emergency, disaster, personnel shortage, workload, or work in progress. May be required to work on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Work occurs in all weather conditions, including rain, snow, and extreme heat and cold.


The preferred candidate will work as both a Part-time Crossing Guard and Community Service Officer with normal work hours of less than 30 hours per week.



Starting Hourly Wage:


$16 or $18 per hour depending on position filled


Prior experience is preferred.
