The City of Bozeman, located in southwestern Montana is a full service community of more than 20 square miles with a resident population of 40,000. Bozeman, the Gallatin County seat, is seeking experienced police professionals as candidates to lead the Bozeman Police Department.


The Police Department has a compliment of 66 sworn officers, consisting of a Chief, 1 Deputy Chief, 3 Captains, 9 Sergeants, 41 Officers and 7 Civilian Positions.  In 2014, the Department responded to approximately 48,000 calls for service.  The Bozeman Police Department has a strong commitment to providing exceptional law enforcement services in conjunction with the needs of the community.  Police Officers and Sergeants are represented by the Bozeman Police Protective Association.


Bozeman and Gallatin County make up the fastest growing community in Montana with the expectation that the area population will grow to about 60,000 by 2034.  Residents of Bozeman receive the benefits of an extraordinary standard of living with year round recreational offerings and cultural events; clean air and a moderate climate. Bozeman is home to Montana State University, with a student enrollment of over 15,000, it serves as the primary campus of the Montana State University System.


A candidate for the position of Chief of Police must be a proven leader, committed to the growth and development of the Department.  The candidate will be an exceptional communicator, able to thoughtfully represent the interests of the Department and the City, with a high level of community engagement.


Candidates must possess a bachelorís degree in Public Administration, Criminal Justice or a closely related field.  The candidate will have at least 10 years of related experience with at least five years experience in a law enforcement leadership position, or have the equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential duties of the position. Candidates must be eligible for Montana POST Administrative Certificate within one (1) year of employment. A Masterís Degree and Executive management certificates including the FBI National Academy, Northwestern University Center for Public Safety or other similar State and/or National programs are desirable.


Candidates must possess well developed interpersonal communication and public presentation skills and be a person of utmost integrity.  The Chief of Police is appointed by the City Manager.



The starting salary range for the position is:


$86,846 - $95,455 DOQ with an excellent benefit and retirement package
