Performs work of moderate difficulty in investigating alleged or suspected criminal violations of local, state and federal laws to determine if evidence is sufficient to recommend prosecution and enforcing law and order within the Zuni reservation.








Bachelor's Degree in Police Science with two (2) years of experience in criminal investigations.




Associates Degree in Police Science with four (4) years of experience in criminal investigations.




Eight (8) years of work experience in patrol as a police officer which two (2) years must have been investigation type work. 


Training must include:

  2. Accident Reconstruction

  3. CPR Basic

  4. Criminal Investigation

  5. Crime Scene  Management

  6. Customer Service

  7. Defensive Driving

  8. Defensive Tactics

  9. First Responder

  10. Haz-Mat Awareness and Operations

  11. Fire and Arson Investigations

  12. Homicide Investigations (Basic and Advanced)

  13. Instructor Development

  14. Interviewing and Interrogation (Basic and Advanced)

  15. First line supervisor

  16. Keyboarding (Basic)

  17. Leadership

  18. Officer Survival

  19. Pepper Spray

  20. Stress Management


  • Must possess a valid New Mexico Driver's License with no DUI/DWI convictions.

  • Must be certified in all the areas listed above under training. 



On call 24 hours.  Must be willing to work shifts, weekends, and holidays. Incumbents are exposed to weather extremes, and physical danger, including raids, surveillance, and vehicular pursuits over all types terrain. Night, weekend, and holiday work is required. Subject to thorough background investigation, psychological evaluation, and random drug tests.



  1. Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of crime prevention and law enforcement activities. 

  2. Considerable knowledge of: investigative techniques and procedures; laws of arrest, search, and seizure; rules of evidence and court procedures, and legal rights of citizens. 

  3. Thorough knowledge of federal, tribal, and state, laws and regulations. 

  4. Some knowledge of: drug and alcohol trends and abuse; techniques of criminal enterprise; state and federal criminal codes including the Uniform Controlled Substance Act and/or the Alcohol Beverage Control Act; first aid.

  5. Demonstrated ability to: conduct investigations; gather and analyze facts and evidence and prepare case reports and recommendations. 

  6. Ability to communicate effectively writing and verbally.

  7. Ability to write narrative reports.

  8. Ability to testify in court.

  9. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with tribal employees and the general public.
