Police Chief



The City of Sidney (pop. 20,000) is conducting a national search for an experienced, proven, innovative individual to be the next Sidney Police Chief and lead the Police Department consisting of 40 sworn officers, twelve 911 Dispatchers, and seven civilian employees with an annual operating budget of about $6 million.  The current Police Chief is retiring after serving the City for thirty-nine years, twenty years as chief.


The Sidney Police Department is well respected in our community and throughout the state of Ohio.  The Sidney Police Department has a new state of the art complex with a 911 Call Center. The department includes Investigators, K-9 units, Community Resource Officers, Drug Enforcement & Tactical Response teams. The Sidney Police Department provides an excellent working environment, in a great community for well trained -dedicated staff.


The Police Chief directly supervises the work of two Police Captains and the Office Supervisor. The Police Chief position is a Senior Director within the City organization and reports to the City Manager.  The Police Chief is a high profile community leader position within the City and interacts with a variety of safety organizations (Fire Chief, Shelby County Sheriff, State Highway Patrol), businesses and citizens.


In addition to the requirements listed below; qualified individuals will be expected to have advanced leadership knowledge and skills in community policing, operations, supervision, budgeting, grant administration, and crime intervention strategies.  



Minimum Requirements:

  • Documented successful experience in subordinate levels in the police ranks (Officer, Sergeant, Lieutenant and Captain).

  • Fifteen (15) continuous years of local government service in the Law Enforcement Field.

  • Five (5) years of Management Level experience as an operations Supervisor.

  • Associate Degree in Law Enforcement or equivalent curriculum required (Bachelorís degree in criminal justice or related filed preferred).

  • Must establish residence within Shelby County within twelve months after the appointment.

  • U.S. Citizen.

  • Valid Driverís license.


Salary Range $67,082 minimum to $87,871 maximum with the opportunity for an Educational Bonus of $2,000 per year.  Pay increase within the stated pay range available after successfully completing six months of service. Excellent benefits.
