Position Details

Community & Position Summary:

The Village of Lisle is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Community Service Officer within the Police Department. Providing high quality, professional police department services that promote a safe and secure community is a top priority.

Lisle is a vibrant and dynamic community located in Chicago's western suburbs with significant economic opportunity and a high quality of life. Called "The Arboretum Village," the community is situated along the prestigious I-88 Corporate Corridor just 26 miles west of Chicago's loop in DuPage County. Lisle has a nature-themed redeveloped downtown, and approximately 750 businesses located in a variety of business districts. It is home to many corporate headquarters including AST, Navistar, Molex, SunCoke, and AMITA Health, has beautiful neighborhoods, three full-service hotels, Benedictine University, a growing local/independent restaurant scene, extensive recreational opportunities including the West Suburban Sports Complex, and excellent schools all within just a short train ride to downtown Chicago. The community has a major commercial corridor along Ogden Avenue with access to the north/south and east/west tollways just minutes away.

Under the general direction of the Community Service Officer Supervisor, the successful candidate will be able to communicate effectively, make responsible decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures, and demonstrate the highest levels of integrity in the conduct of their work.

Principal Responsibilities:

• Provide assistance to other operational police service units through the completion of assigned tasks.
• Perform non-criminal assignments such as completion of police reports, assist with motorist aids, vehicle lock-outs, and traffic control at accident scenes.
• Perform animal control duties.
• Searches, captures and transports stray domestic animal(s) to known owners or impounds animal(s) at designated kennel such as the DuPage County Animal Control.
• Investigates cruelty to animals and animal bite complaints.
• Informs owner of precautionary impounding procedures.
• Issues code violation citations and enforces rabies vaccination compliance as necessary.
• Enforce parking regulations and village ordinances.
• Assist in patrolling crossing guard locations and special events with crowd control, traffic, and parking.
• Become certified in child safety seat installation.
• Cross train to perform administrative records duties and serve as a backup for records personnel as needed.
• Awareness of, and appreciation for, cultural diversity in the work environment and in the larger community.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment and make constructive recommendations to improve overall departmental efficiency.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills; the ability to understand and follow complex verbal and written instructions. 

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Six months' experience in tasks involving public contact, customer service or related work or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Excellent public service skills; bilingual skills a plus.
• Must have a valid Illinois driver's license. 

Physical Demands:

• Tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling moderately heavy objects and materials up to 50 pounds; and may occasionally involve objects and materials up to 100 pounds with assistance.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying environmental conditions.
• Ability to perform a variety of physical and mental skills including but not limited to standing or sitting for extended periods of time, reading, writing, make sound decisions, use good judgment and demonstrate intellectual and communication capabilities.
