  Candidates with equivalent emergency dispatch experience may be eligible for an accelerated wage rate based on experience.

  12 hour shifts; 3-2 / 2-3 on/off rotation with one 8 hour shift

Position Details

911 Communications Operator Opportunity - Full Time

Communications Operators:

19 full time; 2 part time; 2 Shift Leaders

Department Staff:

100 members including sworn officers, sworn supervisory, management, civilian, and 911 Emergency Dispatch staff

The Communications Division of the Gurnee Police Department provides 24 hour consolidated emergency and non-emergency radio and telephone communications support for multiple agencies / communities.  The Communications Division also assists with dispatching and communication needs for other Village entities.  The Gurnee Communications Division responds to over 145,000 emergency and non-emergency telephone calls per year and dispatches over 100,000 police calls and 14,000 Fire/EMS calls annually.

We are looking for candidates with the following key qualities to join our team:

• ability to quickly learn the operation of equipment and system procedures; 
• ability to make rapid and precise judgments in a real-time work situations; 
• remain calm under conditions that are stressful; 
• coordinate many different processes at once and coordinate actions in relation to the actions taken by others; 
• adjust rapidly to changes in the tempo of work activity; 
• use sound judgment and act decisively in emergency situations; 
• ability to communicate effectively (rapidly, clearly, and distinctly) orally and in writing; and 
• interpersonal skills and characteristics that reflect a service orientation and desire to treat the public with tact, courtesy, and respect.

Minimum Requirements include:

• US citizen/legal work authorization;
• HS Diploma/GED;
• Ability to accurately type at least 35 wpm; candidates offered an interview will be required to take a typing test
• Ability to obtain and maintain LEADS full access; and 
• Ability to obtain Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) certification prior to concluding the Communications Operator training program (approx. 9-12 months) as a condition of continued employment. 

Additional desirable qualifications include any or all of the following:

• Previous recent emergency dispatch experience in police and/or Fire/EMS;
• Bilingual skills;
• Formal education, certification, or completion of a college level training program in emergency dispatch.
