Position Details

District Security Department Officer: School Safety, Security, and Training Program

Yorkville CUSD 115 has openings for District Security Department Officers.

Responsible for providing safety and security services for the school campus and protecting the life and wellbeing of students, staff, and visitors.  The District Security Department Officer (DSDO) will have successfully completed training. The DSDO will perform routine patrols of school facilities and work closely with staff to ensure schools are secure both during the regular school day, and at events occurring outside normal school hours.  The DSDO will have to demonstrate effective and proactive communication and exhibit the ability to develop positive and professional relationships with students and staff. Additionally, it will be expected that this position will perform other duties and responsibilities as they are assigned.

ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

The District 115 DSDO shall carry out the essential duties listed below, all subject to applicable student records and mental health confidentiality laws.  This list is not all inclusive as other responsibilities will be assigned.

  • Provide security for locations/facilities; maintain a professional appearance and work proactively to identify potential safety concerns or indicators of school violence.  
  • Work collaboratively with school administrators, staff, DSD Supervisors, Campus Monitors, Yorkville Police Department, and Kendall County Sheriff’s Office to ensure school safety.
  • Conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations when assigned.  Remain available and cooperate with local law enforcement as directed.
  • When assigned, handle complaints filed by students, staff, or others in a professional and timely manner.  Report the information to administration as directed. 
  • Ensure reports are generated in a professional, timely and complete manner. 
  • Remain knowledgeable of current processes and procedures pertinent to the District 115 School Safety, Security, and Training Program through continued education, seminars, and training.
  • Respond as directed to work during emergencies, including working extended duty hours over weekends and holidays, or during periods of severe or inclement weather.
  • Maintain constant mental alertness and mobility.  Have the ability to quickly evaluate and respond to critical situations as required.
  • At all times, DSDO’s will be required to maintain confidentiality.  The sharing of information outside the designated supervisory chain is prohibited. This includes specifically but without limitation, compliance with applicable student records and mental health confidentiality laws.
  • Participate in training programs to enhance the individual skills and proficiency related to job responsibilities, which include training offered on effective interaction with special needs students.  
  • Successfully complete ongoing training, weapons inspections, and firearm qualifications on at least an annual basis.
  • Review current developments, literature, and technical sources of information related to job responsibilities.
  • Adhere to safety rules and procedures.
  • Follow federal and state laws, and maintain a working knowledge of school board policies.  Be willing to take direction from staff and law enforcement as it relates to the performance of duties.
  • Maintain and keep current all certifications required by the District, including but not limited to firearms qualification (i.e., a qualified retired law enforcement officer or qualified law enforcement officer).
  • Duties may include shift work, weekends, and holidays.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication.
  • Establish and maintain a strong working relationship with staff, students, and local law enforcement.
  • Work effectively with little supervision, having the ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Maintain a solid working knowledge of district/school policy and be able to apply that knowledge to effectively handle matters of concern or report them as appropriate.
  • Maintain weapons proficiency as outlined, maintain qualifications, and attend all training required.
  • Maintain knowledge and acceptance of cultural and racial diversity and be aware of community demographics.
  • Consistently display the ability to multitask and manage time properly.
  • Fulfill duties by working toward the goal of public safety, community partnership, and service to district staff, students and families in a professional manner.
  • The ability to respond without hesitation to any threat of violence, properly assess the information available at that time, and respond as needed and appropriate to ensure the safety of all.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Standard high school diploma or satisfactory completion of an approved General Educational Development (GED) Testing Program.
  • Must be a current full-time police officer or a retired police officer, in good standing, that is qualified under the Illinois Retired Officer Concealed Carry Act (IROCC) and if currently retired, having a minimum of five (5) years within the last ten (10) years of experience as a sworn law enforcement officer or corrections officer in “good standing” at time of employment separation. OR HAVE
  • Two years active duty military experience within the last four years in an appropriate military occupational skill, with an honorable discharge may be substituted for law enforcement experience, provided that appropriate qualification to carry a concealed firearm can be obtained to the Board’s satisfaction.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Illinois driver’s license and F.O.I.D card.
  • Computer skills as required for the position.
  • Obtain the requirements outlined below prior to School Board appointment:
    • Hold a valid Illinois Retired Officers Concealed Carry license issued under the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.
    • Have a proven record of comprehensive pistol proficiency, safety and training for candidates other than retired law enforcement.
    • Pass a psychological evaluation administered by a psychologist licensed in Illinois confirming the applicant’s fitness for duty in this position in the K-12 setting.
    • Submit to and pass an initial drug test and drug tests based on reasonable suspicion or following any discharge of the security officer’s firearm
    • Successfully complete certified and nationally recognized training in rapid response/active shooter (Run/Hide/Fight, ALICE, diversity, etc.) as required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • An earned associate’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution or two years of active military experience combined with law enforcement experience.
  • Prior experience in school safety in a K-12 setting and/or prior experience working with adolescents in similar setting
  • Supervisory experience in full-time law enforcement
  • Bilingual skills.
  • Certifications in related skills such as ALICE or Run, Hide, Fight, Crisis Intervention Team (CIT), Juvenile Officer and School Resource Officer SRO.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The DSDO will spend part of the working day inside district facilities coordinating work with supervisory and district staff, speaking with other employees and students, and/or meeting with administration or the public.  The working conditions are comfortable.  The noise level is generally quiet to moderately noisy.  The DSDO will perform foot patrols and conduct preventive or otherwise proactive functions throughout the scheduled shifts. DSDO’s may frequently work outside in all types of weather conditions and may experience inclement weather for extended periods of time.  At times the work environment will be extremely stressful and there is a potential of being exposed to verbal assaults or being involved in physical confrontations.  DSDO’s may also be exposed to bodily fluids or other hazardous materials while performing their duties.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

DSDO’s will frequently be required to sit, talk, hear, stand, run, and walk.  DSDO’s will use their hands to handle or operate objects, tools, and controls: will reach with arms and hands: will climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.  DSDO’s will occasionally lift up to 50 pounds and may push objects such as furniture.  DSDO’s will occasionally have to perform effectively while involved in a physical altercation with another subject.  Specific vision abilities required for this position include close and distance visual acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to focus.

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District's approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the School Board.
