Firefighter

You must meet the following minimum requirements:

• Citizenship:  Must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident
• Driver’s License:  Must have a valid Driver’s License at the time of application and at time of hire.
• Age Requirements:  Applicants must have attained their 20th birthday at the last date for filing applications (9/15/21) and must be 21 at time of hire. Applicants must be under the age of 35 at time of hire. Unless exempt from such age limitations as provided in State Statute 65 IL 5/10-2.1-6 which provides, in part, that the age limitation does not apply to any person previously employed as a full-time firefighter in a regularly constituted fire department of any municipality or fire protection district located in Illinois.
• Education:  Must have a High School Diploma, GED Certificate or High School Proficiency.
• Character:  Must have no felony convictions and be of good moral character as described in State Statute 65 IL 5/10-2.1-6.
• Residence:  At this time the City of Kankakee does not have a residency requirement for members of the Kankakee Fire Department.
• Testing:  Must be able to successfully complete all phases of testing.
• Certifications:  Must be a certified Firefighter II or Basic Operations Firefighter through the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal at the time of hire; AND Must, possess a certified Paramedic License through the Illinois Department of Public Health at the time of hire
• CPAT Card: Applicants must have a valid CPAT Card at time of hire.
