Job Summary:

Under general supervision, performs a variety of clerical, administrative and routine investigative functions to support the Police Department’s criminal investigation activities.

Essential Functions:

• Conducts follow-up interviews, in person or over the phone, to gather additional information from witnesses and victims.
• Navigates various databases and information systems to capture incident-related data.
• Gathers and analyzes data from various sources, including financial documents, phone records, etc, to identify and capture relevant information.
• Prepares comprehensive investigative reports consisting of information gathered from interviews, databases, records and other sources.
• Prepares search warrants, subpoenas, and court orders, as instructed.
• Conducts witness debriefings, neighborhood canvasses, and case reviews.
• Prepares and presents testimony for court and administrative hearings.
• Provides administrative support to assist sworn Investigative staff with investigative tasks,
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of the principles and practices of police investigations.
• Knowledge of general office equipment and procedures.
• Knowledge of relevant software applications including Word, Excel and Outlook.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

• Ability to effectively elicit information from interview subjects.
• Ability to analyze data, identify patterns and draw logical conclusions.
• Ability to prepare professional reports and analyses.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Ability to prepare and present information to audiences of varying backgrounds and education.
• Ability to manage time effectively to complete assigned work in a timely manner.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality

Required Credentials and Experience:

• Associate’s Degree.
• Three years of experience in a related investigative capacity.
• Valid State of Illinois Driver’s License.

Preferred Credentials and Experience:

• Bachelor’s Degree. 

Physical Demands:

• Operates office equipment.
• Remains in a stationary position for an hour or more.
• Travels to investigation sites, courts, and seminar/training locations.
• Occasionally transports objects weighing 5-20 pounds.

Work Environment:

• General office environment.
• Regular travel to investigation sites, with potential exposure to weather and extreme temperatures.
• Regular interaction with subjects who may be emotional, anxious or irate.
• Option to telecommute or work remotely
