The Village of Glencoe is seeking individuals to become Paid-on-Call Firefighters and Firefighter/Paramedics ("POC FFs") to supplement its full-time sworn Public Safety Officers.

What the job is:

The Glencoe Public Safety Department is a full-service, combined public safety department that is staffed by civilians as well as sworn Public Safety Officers, who are fully cross-trained to provide police, fire, and emergency medical services, and is supplemented by civilian POC FFs. The Village is a member of MABAS Division 3. Because of the urgent nature of emergency responses and mutual aid network activations, POC FFs must be able to respond to calls and report for duty with very little advanced notice, and must be capable of responding to calls on an as-needed basis and reporting to work within 30 minutes of being called. POC FF/Paramedics may be used to provide supplemental staffing and work full 24 hour shifts to fill vacant shifts.

Job responsibilities include:

• Backup station coverage for emergency responses
• Supplement full-time staff by working up to 24 hour shifts
• Assists with filling vacant fire/medic shifts to provide fire suppression and/or paramedic services
• Must respond to at least 40% of calls offered per year to remain in good standing
• Assists with community and public education events
• Participates in monthly drills, typically 2-4 hours twice per month (must participate in at least 50% of drills; may be excused if comparable training completed in a full-time fire department) 

Required qualifications include:

Education and Experience:

• High school diploma or GED
• Valid driver's license (Class B or CDL) 

Functional Knowledge and Certifications:

• Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal Firefighter II or Basic Operations Firefighter
• Illinois Paramedic license (capable of gaining acceptance into the Highland Park Hospital/Region X EMS System within 60 days of appointment)
• Strong emphasis on workplace safety Interpersonal and Communication
• Outstanding customer service skills
• Communicate clearly and effectively
• Ability to work independently and with a team
• Maintain strong working relationship with Public Safety staff and external agencies
• Clearly and concisely document facts in reports 

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

• Heavy-duty job tasks; frequent lifting/carrying up to 10 lbs. and occasional lifting/carrying up to 100 lbs.
• Walking or traversing across a variety of surfaces
• Use of hand tools and handling supplies
• Close, distant, color and peripheral vision; depth perception; ability to adjust focus
• Frequent communication with customers
• Work performed indoors in office, vehicle or outdoors (in all weather conditions)
• Work performed in emergency and stressful situations
• Exposed to hearing alarms and hazards associated with firefighting and/or rendering emergency medical assistance, including smoke, noxious odors, fumes, chemicals, airborne and blood-borne pathogens, solvents and oils
• Occasional work near moving mechanical parts, exposure to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electric shock, loud noises and vibration
