Position Details

DESCRIPTION:

Assist district and school staff in the development and implementation of best practices security procedures, provide security training for all staff and oversees district wide security technology systems.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Chair the District Level Safety Committee and provide information to Building Level Safety Committees as needed.
  • Monitor and assist in the development of Building Level Safety Committees as needed.
  • Develop a comprehensive plan for district and school safety/security and work collaboratively with persons responsible for implementation of the plan.
  • Communicate safety information and needs with schools, departments and other governmental agencies Plan and direct an emergency response staff training program. 
  • Identify strengths and weaknesses of the various aspects of district and school safety/security guidelines and procedures in written reports.
  • In collaboration with the Technology Services department, develop and maintain security technology systems in buildings. This includes, but is not limited to, security cameras and the "Raptor" visitor management system.
  • Providing training as needed.
  • In collaboration with the Technology Services department, manage the use of the district's access control system. This includes coordination of user access permission and system maintenance.
  • In collaboration with the Technology Services department, assist in evaluation, selection, implementation and management of security technology. This includes, but is not limited to CCTV/Video networks.
  • Conduct periodic school safety inspections.
  • Serve as a liaison to "first responders" and other community stakeholders.
  • Assist in developing a budget in the areas of school safety.
  • Monitor compliance with the required individual building school safety drills and report to Regional Office of Education.
  • Conduct the state required Annual Review Meeting (105 ILCS128, Section 5) for review of school crisis plan protocols, procedures and each building's compliance with the school safety drill act.
  • Attend meetings and conferences that address issues affecting the safety of the school community.
  • Represent the district on committees, councils or task forces pertaining to school safety.
  • Maintain the official "key holder" call list for the district's alarm monitoring company, police and fire departments.
  • Serve as a member on the District Level Crisis Team. Use computer applications such as spreadsheet, word processing, email, calendar, and database software in the performance of the job.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES:

  • Thorough knowledge of current trends in research and practices in public school safety.
  • Demonstrated competence in leadership, organization, interpersonal relations and communications.
  • Ability to maintain and instill high standards of ethics and integrity.
  • Ability to develop policies and administrative procedures related to school safety.
  • Knowledge of how to handle emergency situations and the ability to act on a crisis plan if necessary.
  • Ability to utilize technology in the implementation of a comprehensive safety program.
  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships with law enforcement, fire protection or emergency management agencies and school district personnel.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the community on school safety issues.
  • Ability to follow oral or written work orders from supervisor, and to coordinate work with others.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, problem solve and resolve issues.
  • Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work. 

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

  • Occasional strenuous physical work.
  • Occasional work in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow. 

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION/QUALIFICATIONS PROFILE:

  • Bachelor's Degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, fire protection or safety management, or closely related field.
  • Or associates degree and 3-5 years of experience in law enforcement, fire protection or safety management.
  • Two years of school liaison officer experience preferred.
  • Appropriate NIMS certification required. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work in standard school building environment.
  • Work outdoors and onsite at school buildings.
