Traffic Safety Intern

Position Summary:

Performs technical and field duties in support of the Traffic Safety Unit of the Police Department. Responsibilities include assisting Traffic Unit officers during the summer months with traffic studies and equipment. Duties include the deployment of electronic speed display signs, deployment of traffic data recorders, retrieval of traffic data, completion of traffic study reports and performing other duties as assigned by the Traffic Safety Sergeant.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: 

• Deploys electronic traffic data recorders at roadway locations.
• Deploys electronic speed display signs for traffic calming.
• Retrieves and studies electronic traffic data to include speed, volume and direction.
• Prepares traffic data reports; analyzes and outlines findings in accordance with accepted traffic safety parameters.
• Prepares monthly reports and correspondence on assigned traffic studies to be provided to the Traffic Safety Sergeant.
• Promotes and maintains responsive employee, customer and community relations.
• Ensures the maintenance of safe work areas and equipment, and promptly corrects work hazards, as necessary; investigates and immediately reports all work-related injuries, complies with all safety rules and attends appropriate safety programs.
• Performs related duties as assigned by the Traffic Safety Sergeant.

Qualifications: 

• Must be currently enrolled in a criminal justice, civil engineering, engineering technology, or related associate's or bachelor's degree program.
• Valid driver's license.

This is a seasonal position. The selected candidates are expected to work full-time from approximately May through August.
