The City of DeKalb, Illinois invites candidates to apply and test for the position of Telecommunicator.
Applications will be accepted, and testing will be performed to fill a current part-time position and establish an applicant pool for future full-time and part-time vacancies.
The Telecommunicator receives emergent and non-emergent telephone inquiries and requests for Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Services within our community and fire protection district. The Communications Division is staffed 24/7 by a Communications Coordinator, 11 full-time and six part-time highly trained telecommunicators (TCs). The Telecommunicator receives, analyzes, classifies, prioritizes and responds to Police and Fire calls of an emergency and non-emergency nature, including those calls involving life-threatening situations. In 2018, the Communications Division received over 115,000 phone calls, including over 22,486 9-1-1 calls, while dispatching 55,847 police calls and 6,184 fire/EMS calls.
We require a high school diploma or equivalent and the ability to type a minimum of 40 wpm or 10,000 kph. Previous experience in emergency services communications and/or the familiarity with radio records management and computer-aided dispatch systems desired.
Candidates musts complete the City of DeKalb application and the exam through the National Testing Network (NTN) by June 30, 2019.

Only those candidates that pass the NTN exam and meet the minimum qualifications through the application process will be considered for an oral interview. Finalists will be subject to a pre-employment police background check. All offers will be contingent upon the successful completion of a psychological evaluation and physical examination including a drug screening.
