Community Service Officer/Animal Care & Control Officer

The Midlothian Police Department is accepting applications/resumes for an open Community Service Officer/Animal Care & Control Officer position.

Description:

This position is responsible for performing specialized and technical work in the enforcement of the Village's ordinances and regulations and also serving as an animal care and control officer, thereby handling complaints, providing assistance and providing education to the community in relation to domestic animals, strays and wildlife. This position involves responding to complaints, issuing tickets for violations, appearing and testifying in court, maintaining records and educating residents and ensuring the humane care of domestic animals and pets.

Essential Functions:

• Picks up stray and injured animals and removes them from residential areas; releases detained animals to owners
• Enforces parking violations and local ordinances within the community
• Transports paperwork to the Courthouse in a timely manner
• Performs bank runs for the Village
• Issues warnings and tickets for violations; testifies in court; assists with animals on evictions; assists Police Department with investigating cruelty complaints
• Completes required reports; performs follow-up on animal related incidents
• Maintains accurate animal care and control files
• Maintains a good working relationship with outside agencies and other animal organizations and the general public; assists senior citizens and the handicapped with their animals if they require assistance; consults with citizens on animal proofing their home and establishing and implementing a animal education program for residents
• Recommends changes to policy and procedures and assists in revising current ordinance
• Coordinates and follow up with shelters/rescues with regard to animals turned over
• Conducts trainings with Midlothian Public Works and Midlothian Police Department On animal safety
• Coordinates and hosts microchip and vaccine clinic for residents
• Performs any additional duties at the direction of management

Minimum Qualifications:

• Possession of a high school diploma or GED
• Experience with animal handling and care; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills
• Knowledge of proper animal handling
• Knowledge of animal diseases, distemper, and treatment of injuries
• Ability to learn proper use of traps, nets and other devices used to capture animals
• Ability to handle mean, hostile animals to reduce the possibility of injury
• Ability to read and follow written and oral instructions
• Ability to compile reports in a clear, concise manner
• Ability to work cooperatively with other employees and the general public to resolve complaints related to animals
• Ability to assess and prioritize complaints and deal with sometimes hostile individuals
• Ability to multi-task between multiple assignments and/or projects

Special Licenses & Requirements:

• Possession of a valid Illinois Driver's License and safe driving record
• NACHO certificated preferred but not required
