The United City of Yorkville is seeking an experienced leader to fill the position of Chief of Police.
The United City of Yorkville is a non-home rule municipality, with a population of 19,022 located 50 miles southwest of the City of Chicago and is located in the county seat, Kendall County, IL. The Chief of Police reports to the Mayor and City Council and supervises the Deputy Chief(s) and the Executive Assistant. The Police Department includes 2 Deputy Chiefs, 5 Sergeants, 23 Patrol Officers, an Executive Assistant and 2 Records Clerks. In addition to the full-time personnel, there are 3 part-time Patrol Officers, 2 part-time Records Clerks, 2 Community Service Officers and 6 Crossing Guards. The Fiscal Year 2020 Police Department operating budget is $5.9M.
The Police Chief is the chief executive officer of the department and the final departmental authority on all matters of policy, operations, and discipline. The Chief is responsible for planning, budgeting, staffing, direction, coordinating, and controlling of all department functions and activities of the Police Department.
Candidates must have strong management and leadership skills with a minimum of fifteen (15) years of progressive experience with a law enforcement agency as a sworn police officer with at least ten (10) years of which are in supervisory capacity with a comparably sized department and seven (7) years of experience at the command level; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience as a Deputy Chief and/or a Bachelor’s Degree or above is strongly preferred. Command leadership training such as the F.B.I. National Academy or similar programs are highly desirable.
