The Belvidere Police Department is accepting applications for sworn full-time lateral entry police officers.
The City of Belvidere has a diverse population of 26,500, with a low crime rate. The Community has consistently shown strong support for our police department and law enforcement as a whole. Our agency has 44 sworn officers that support all aspects of patrol and investigative functions.
Minimum Qualifications for Lateral Transfer:
Applicants for lateral transfer Police Officer appointments must meet the following minimum qualifications and requirements at the time of application:
- 1 year of full-time law enforcement experience.
- Police officer certification from ILETSB or be able to successfully transfer out of state certification from another state.
- A valid driver’s license
- United States Citizen or be a Naturalized Citizen
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Comply with all requirements of the position and have the ability to pass all examinations and training requirements
- Exhibit good moral character and have no felony convictions. Applicants with misdemeanor conviction (s) may be disqualified from the higher process as set forth in 65 ILCS 5/Article 10 1-7(c). Certain misdemeanors may disqualify candidates for a position as a police officer.
- Possess a valid FOID card or be able to obtain a FOID card and be able to safely and accurately discharge a firearm.
- Pass a polygraph examination, an employment background investigation, a medical examination, a psychological examination, and a drug screening.
The applicant must have the ability to furnish upon request a copy of the following, to the extent applicable:
- Professional licenses
- Training certificates
- Documents confirming work experience
- Birth Certificate
- Transcripts of higher learning
- Military transcripts
- Any other employment related material as requested or required

Selection Process:
Each phase of the process listed below is a pass/fail and a “pass” is required to proceed to the next phase.
- Review of the application materials
- Command Staff Interview
- Background Investigation
- Polygraph Examination
- Fire and Police Commission Interview
Post offer examinations, including but not limited to:
- Psychological Examination
- Medical examination
- Drug screening
