Certified Police Officer

The DeKalb Police Department consists of 64 sworn officers and 39 civilian personnel. The Department consists of two Bureaus:  Operations and Support, and four divisions:  Patrol, Investigations, Support Services and Communications. The Department is staffed with a Chief of Police, Deputy Chief, four Commanders, and 11 Sergeants and responded to 55,847 calls for service in 2018. The City of DeKalb is located 60 miles west of Chicago and 30 miles southeast of Rockford. We are the home of the second largest university in the State of Illinois – Northern Illinois University.

Minimum Requirements at Time of Application:

• Certification as a full-time Permanent Police Officer as defined in 50 ILCS 705/1, et seq by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training & Standards Board.
• At least 21 years of age and under 41 years of age if currently a Certified State of Illinois Police Officer (full-time).
• Valid Driver’s License.
• Minimum of High School Diploma or equivalent. 

Additional Minimum Requirements at Time of Conditional Offer:

• Valid Illinois Driver's License. 
• Must pass psychological and medical examinations. 

Residency: 

30-mile residency requirement after 15 months of employment.
