Position Description:

Ideal Candidate Statement:

The successful candidate will have a working knowledge of the California Penal Code, Vehicle Code, and Education Code, familiarity with the educational goals of the Community College system, and knowledge of law enforcement principles. The candidate will have the ability to communicate with various types of individuals, deal with adversity, work in a team environment, follow orders and procedures, the ability to learn and adapt to new and different situations and develop positive working relationships. The successful candidate can multi-task, prioritize projects, and meet mandatory and regulatory deadlines.

Job Description Summary:

The District reserves the right to hire one or more Safety Officers from this pool of qualified candidates.

Positions are 100%, 12 month, classified positions.

One position will be assigned to the graveyard shift and receive a 5% shift differential. This position is funded by grant funds, and employment is subject to those funds being available.

BASIC FUNCTION :

Under the direction of the Chief of Campus Police Services, conduct patrols of campus grounds and assigned areas on foot and in a vehicle; respond to service calls; investigate crimes and incidents; prepare, update, submit and issue a variety of documents; issue parking and traffic citations; open and secure campus as assigned; process and issue parking permits, carpool permits and room keys to students, guests, staff and faculty in compliance with College policies; provide assistance to the Chief and campus police personnel as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS :

The Campus Safety Officer I is the entry-level position in the series. Incumbents are responsible for maintaining Campus safety in accordance with College policies and procedures. The Campus Safety Officer II is the senior level position in the series. Incumbents provide assistance to senior safety personnel regarding complex Campus Safety activities.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • California penal, vehicle, fire and education codes, including PC 832 and PC 837 (Laws of Arrest).
  • College policies and procedures.

  • General investigative and law enforcement practices.
  • Crowd and traffic control techniques.
  • City, State and local ordinances related to theft, arson, vandalism, malicious mischief and trespassing.

ABILITY TO:

  • Evaluate security incidents and take appropriate action according to established guidelines.

  • Observe, detect and deter improper behavior and unlawful activities.
  • Utilize crowd and traffic control techniques.
  • Respond to disturbances and emergency situations calmly and rationally.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: 

  • Conduct patrols of campus grounds and assigned areas on foot and in a vehicle; respond to service calls, including medical, animal control, crowd control, traffic and vehicle service calls; conduct traffic stops and issue traffic and parking citations; conduct welfare checks; enforce College, County, State and federal laws, rules, regulations and policies.
  • Investigate crimes and incidents; investigate suspicious persons and vehicles; interview victims, complainants, witnesses and suspects; conduct searches, collect and preserve evidence; conduct arrests of crime suspects; coordinate efforts with police departments to assure appropriate and timely response in emergency situations; respond to threats in conjunction with appropriate authorities.
  • Maintain, submit and issue a variety of documents; create and update crime report forms and track crime statistics; maintain and submit logs relating to daily activities, alarm activations, dispatches, field contacts, restraining orders and other information.
  • Open and secure campus as assigned; arm and disarm burglar alarms; lock and unlock doors and gates; investigate and enforce unauthorized use of facilities; respond to fire and burglar alarm activations.
  • Process and issue parking permits, carpool permits and room keys to students, guests, staff and faculty in compliance with College policies.
  • Operate a variety of safety and office equipment, including a T3 motion device, two-way radio, pepper spray, baton, handcuffs, video surveillance systems, digital camera, automated external defibrillator (AED ), computer and assigned software and other assigned equipment; drive a vehicle to conduct work.
  • Attend a variety of meetings, trainings and workshop activities as required.

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Perform related duties as assigned.

ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL DUTIES FOR CAMPUS SAFETY OFFICER II:

  • Prepare, update, submit and issue a variety of documents; create and update crime report forms and track crime statistics; maintain and submit logs relating to daily activities, alarm activations, dispatches, field contacts, restraining orders and other information.
  • Provide assistance to the Chief and senior safety personnel as assigned; provide dispatch duties; conduct public relations activities; collect and deliver legal tender, such as parking machines, State checks and other monies.

Education and Experience:

CAMPUS SAFETY OFFICER I:

  • Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and two years campus safety experience.
CAMPUS SAFETY OFFICER II:
  • Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school supplemented by college-level coursework in criminal psychology or related field and some Peace Officer training.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid First Aid/CPR and AED license issued by an authorized agency.
  • Valid California driver's license.
  • Completion of a PC 832 Laws of Arrest course or school police officer course.
