TCs receive 2 weeks of vacation after completion of probationary period.
The City of Waukegan, Illinois invites candidates to test for the position of Telecommunicator (TC).
The City of Waukegan has one immediate opening for a TC and will establish a list of applicants for future vacancies.
The TC receives emergent and non-emergent telephone inquiries and requests for Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Services within our city. The Communications Division is staffed 24/7 by 21 full-time, highly trained TCs.
TCs work 8.5 hour days on a 5/2, 5/3 rotating schedule, 3 shifts per day.
The Waukegan dispatch center utilizes the Tyler Technologies - Computer Aided Dispatch program (CAD). In addition to the CAD technology, the Waukegan Dispatch center also utilizes “Priority Dispatch” Emergency Medical Dispatching (EMD) pre-arrival questioning, as well as “SOLACOM” call handling equipment. These systems will be implemented at the future consolidated dispatch center for Lake County, IL. (which Waukegan and most jurisdictions will be members) Having a working knowledge of these technologies and equipment, makes the Waukegan TC more marketable upon implementation of consolidation.
Proficiency in a foreign language (Spanish) and/or previous experience in emergency services communications and/or the familiarity with radio records management and computer-aided dispatch systems is desired but not mandatory.

Candidates who pass the written exam will be invited to an oral board interview. Finalists will be subject to a pre-employment police background check. All offers will be contingent upon the successful completion of a psychological evaluation and physical examination including a drug screening.
