Entry-Level and Lateral Police Officer Hiring Process

Plainfield Police Department

The Board of Police Commissioners of the Village of Plainfield, Illinois is accepting applications for the position of police officer with the Plainfield Police Department.

All applicants must meet the following minimum requirements established by the Village of Plainfield: 

• U.S. citizenship;
• No felony convictions;
• Valid state-issued driver's license;
• Minimum of 21 years of age and UNDER 35 years of age by the application deadline date (March 20, 2023), unless meets requirements for lateral transfer or is otherwise exempt by state statute;
• Possess an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice or Law Enforcement -OR- a Bachelor's Degree in any field - OR - 60 credit hours from an accredited college, university or junior college;
• Possess a valid P.O.W.E.R. Test Card issued within one year of the written exam* (issued between April 1, 2022 and April 1, 2023);

• Participate in a Mandatory Orientation and Written Examination to be held on Saturday, April 1, 2023;
• The Village of Plainfield will not consider members of the immediate family of current employees of the Village for employment.  For the purpose of clarification, immediate family is defined by blood or marriage as spouse, parent, child, grandparent, grandchild, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, first cousin, step-parent, step-brother, step-sister, step-son, step-daughter, niece, nephew, mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister-in-law, and brother-in-law.

Lateral Transfer Candidates:

An applicant who is a police officer in good standing with the law enforcement agency he/she is employed with and certified by the State certification board is eligible to be placed on a lateral transfer eligibility list.

• Lateral transfer candidates are NOT required to obtain a P.O.W.E.R. test card;
• Lateral transfer candidates are NOT required to take the written exam;
• Lateral transfer candidates ARE REQUIRED to participate in the oral interview process. 

PLEASE NOTE: Potential lateral transfer candidates may elect to apply for both the lateral list and the entry level list. If electing to apply for both lists, you will be required to obtain a P.O.W.E.R. test card and take the written exam. The village will hire off of both entry level and lateral lists as it meets the needs of the organization. Your best chance of employment is to apply to both entry and lateral list if applicable.

In order to be eligible for the Lateral Transfer Eligibility List, you must meet the following requirements:

• Previously been full-time sworn officers of a regular police department in any municipality, county, university or State law enforcement agency for at least two (2) years; AND
• Certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board; AND
• Possess substantially equivalent skills and abilities as a Village of Plainfield Police Officer who has completed the probationary period; AND
• Possess an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice or Law Enforcement -OR- a Bachelor's Degree in any field - OR - 60 credit hours from an accredited college, university or junior college; AND
• Has taken and passed such examinations as the Commission deems necessary to determine fitness for duty as a police officer.
