Position Information

Application Deadline:

  • 03/24/23

Salary:

  • Starting:

    • 2 years experience: $74,256.00
    • 5 years experience: $88,517.00

    Benefits:

Working as a police officer at NIUPD has many benefits over a traditional law enforcement agency. Here are just a few:

    • Competitive pay
      • Lateral transfers are credited for their service time at another police agency, up to 5 years, and come in at that pay level at NIUPD. For example, if you've been a police officer or deputy at another agency for five years, you come in at the same pay level as officers with five years' experience at NIUPD.
    • Overtime Opportunities
      • Northern Illinois University is home to Division I NCAA Mid-American Conference athletic events and hosts a wide variety of popular shows and concerts at its campus venues. You can experience these events on the court, on the field or behind the scenes — and get paid to do it.
    • General Scheduling
      • NIUPD officers sign up for shifts every twelve months. They traditionally work a 12-hour shift, with every other weekend off. Shifts are 7am to 7pm and 7pm to 7am shifts. Officers typically work 2,184 hours annually.
    • Physical Fitness
      • NIUPD recognizes that physical fitness is an important part of an officer's ability to keep the community safe. We offer free membership to the Campus Recreation Center.
    • Employee Assistance Program
      • Just like physical fitness, mental wellness is the foundation to allow officers to stay motivated, think clearly in rapidly evolving situations, and make good decisions for the safety of the community. NIUPD utilizes a free Employee Assistance Program, with trained professional staff who are available to speak with officers in a safe and confidential manner to promote good mental health.
    • Focus on Training
      • NIUPD strives to have one of the best-trained police departments in the region, and officers are encouraged to attend specialized training for themselves so they can mentor other officers, keep their skills sharp, and provide an exemplary level of service to our community.
    • Equipment
      • NIUPD issues all duty equipment, duty firearm, non-lethal weapons, ballistic vests, and all uniform items, excluding boots.
    • Work with the Community
      • NIUPD puts emphasis on its community outreach work, and there are a lot of opportunities to get involved. If you are someone who likes to interact with community members and support young adults as they pursue their college education, then NIUPD is the place for you.
    • World-Class Campus
      • NIU is a nationally recognized public research university that attracts students from around the globe. In 2022, Northern Illinois University was included in the CollegeChoice.net ranking of the '50 Safest Large Colleges and Universities in America'.
    • Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT-B)
      • All officers are trained to become an EMT-B.
    • Parental Leave
      • Northern Illinois University offers five weeks of paid parental leave after the birth or adoption of a child. Under FMLA, there are circumstances where employees can apply for a total of 12 weeks of paid leave.
    • Tuition Benefits
      • Employees at the Northern Illinois University are eligible for a 100 percent tuition waiver at any state university, making it a perfect option for professionals looking to continue their education or earn an advanced degree. Employees with seven years of service earn a 50 percent tuition waiver for their children.
    • Your Health is Important
      • The university offers full health, dental, vision and life insurance plans.
    • Feeling Unwell?
      • At Northern Illinois University, you will earn approximately 10 days of sick time every year. Unused sick time can be used towards your retirement.
    • Relax
      • NIUPD understands that you need time to reset yourself every once in a while. New officers earn approximately 10 days of vacation time their first year. The rate increases as tenure increases. Officers can bank up to 120 hours of comp time a year to be used as time off. Employees also receive approximately 18 paid holidays each year. All combined, you have the potential to have 30 days off each year.
    • Bereavement Leave
      • Northern Illinois University also offers bereavement leave, comparable with other state institutions.
    • Retirement
      • NIUPD is a part of the State Universities Retirement System pension plan.
    • Plan for Your Future
      • As a state employee, you are eligible for a state pension. The state offers three plans to choose from, letting you take control of your retirement. The university also offers supplemental plans such as 403(b) and 457(b) and pays 100 percent of your health insurance in retirement plus a portion of your spouse's.
