You must meet the following minimum requirements:

• Citizenship:  Must be a United States Citizen and/or an alien admitted for permanent residence or lawfully admitted for temporary residence and who produces evidence of intention to become a citizen of the United States.
• Driver’s License:  Must possess a valid Driver’s License at the time of application with the ability to obtain an Illinois Driver’s License upon time of hire.
• Age Requirement:  Applicants must have attained their 21st birthday by the last date for filing applications (5/24/23) or 20 years of age and successfully completed two years of law enforcement study at an accredited college or university.  Applicants must be under the age of 35 years on 5/24/2023 and at such time as the Final Eligibility Register is posted. unless exempt by State Statute 65 IL 5/10 – 2. 1-6 which provides, in part, that the age limitation does not apply to any person previously employed as a certified full-time police officer for a municipality in the United States.  Veterans who have served on active military duty for at least one year may exceed the age limitation of 35 years by years served in active duty, but by no more than 10 years.
• Education:  Must have proof of a high school diploma, or GED Certificate or high school proficiency statement.
• Residence:  All police officers shall reside within the permissible residency boundaries within thirty (30) days after the completion of the probationary period. The permissible residency boundaries shall be within fifteen (15) miles of the intersection of Harlem and Lawrence Avenues, Village of Harwood Heights, Cook County, Illinois. A full-time, first-class patrol officer may petition the corporate authorities on an individual basis, if extenuating circumstances require him or her to establish residency outside of the boundaries. The corporate authorities shall be the sole authority as to whether permission shall be granted with permission being granted only under extenuating circumstances.
• Vision: Must have at least 20/70 vision correctable to 20/20.
• P.O.W.E.R. Card:  All candidates must possess a valid P.O.W.E.R. Card at the time of conditional offer of employment.

There is a $30.00 non-refundable application fee.  Applications are NOT available at the Harwood Heights Police Department or Village Hall.
