Position Details
Performs standard regulation, citation and administrative work in non-sworn law enforcement activities. Shift work may be required. Works under close supervision of the Police Support Services Manager and/or Police Patrol Supervisor. May assist to coordinate, instruct, or supervise the work of new employees or other personnel as assigned.
Examples of Duties:
- Performs general patrol and traffic control functions to include the safeguard from and removal of roadway hazards; the investigation of private property traffic accidents; and assisting school crossings and other pedestrian related traffic concerns.
- Responds to non-criminal service calls such as lockouts; abandoned automobiles; complaints of stray, injured and trapped animals, and non-criminal citizen complaints.
- Enforces parking restrictions in all regulated areas of City; issues citations for parking and other violations.
- Performs front-desk duties involving the collection and organizing of all necessary information for criminal and non-criminal reports; responding to walk-in, electronic and telephonic requests; processing visitor access to police and other City facilities; monitoring prisoners and other secured areas; and answering phones.
- Assists sworn police officers with the search, investigation, escorting and processing of prisoners; fingerprints, photographs, and collects information on persons for other non-criminal purposes.
- Inventory prisoner property and feed prisoners' meals. Performs security and well-being checks of the lock-up facility.
- Processes bond and arrest warrant information in preparation for bond hearing.
- Completes arrest paperwork; verifies and coordinates the processing of any arrest warrants with other agencies; and performs other police records duties as assigned.
- Testifies in court and assists with Administrative Hearing Process.
- Collects monies associated with fees, fines and bonds.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
Typical Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalent, along with ability to read, write and communicate thoughts verbally, and possess a valid driver's license.
- State of Illinois Class "D" Driver's License without record of suspension or revocation in any State.
- No felony convictions or other disqualifying criminal history permitted.
- Knowledge of non-sworn police operating principles, procedures, techniques, equipment, communications; working knowledge of department general orders, as well as department and city policies; working knowledge of federal, state and local laws and their application to non-sworn police activities; working knowledge of other agency operations and protocols.
- Knowledge of and skill in operating various computer software programs, such as the MS Office Suite, LEADS and ICLEAR.
- Knowledge of and skill in operating the ALERTS and CAD computer system.
- Certified in CPR and maintain training in defensive tactics.
- Operate a motor vehicle with emergency/ caution lights.
Supplemental Information:
Requires the frequent use of a police car, radio, expandable baton, OC Spray, handcuffs, dog stick, traffic and fingerprint equipment, camera, PC or tablet, telephone, cell phone, copy machine, scanner, computer and fax machine.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk and run; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, taste and smell.
Work is performed in either an office setting or outdoors in the inspection of various sites. While outdoors, the employee occasionally works in inclement weather conditions, near moving mechanical parts, high/precarious places and wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet in the office to moderate outside.
