Position Details

The Village of Palatine Department of Palatine Police Department is seeking a Police Social Worker.

The Police Social Worker is a civilian employee appointed by the Chief of Police and works under the direct supervision of the Commander of Neighborhood Based Policing. The primary responsibility of this position is to assist Palatine police officers with mental health related calls, such as linking individuals and families to necessary services in efforts to prevent a situation from escalating into a crime. This position will provide crisis co-response, follow up case management, care coordination, mentorship/education, victim service advocacy in crisis incidents and assist with referrals and deferrals through patrol and investigative services from the criminal justice system.

Clinical Responsibilities:

• Responsible for co-response with Palatine police officers to mental health related calls as needed.
• Experience working with the geriatric population (preferred).
• Maintain a working knowledge of the Neighborhood Based Policing philosophy focusing upon citizen and customer satisfaction in all contacts.
• Work closely with and coordinate the delivery of social services with the Patrol and Investigations Bureaus.
• Coordinate and deliver crisis intervention services when called upon.
• Coordinate and deliver short-term counseling and supporting services.
• Provide court advocacy to crime victims. The Police Social Worker is a trained advocate available to provide support in regards to the court system, the prosecution process and advising victims of their rights.
• Maintain the ability to work flexible hours to provide support and services to victims, clients, and other department staff.
• Maintain current knowledge of police activity.
• Responsible for knowledge of Illinois Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Act, orders of protection, Firearm Restraining Orders, and other related laws and acts.
• Maintain a working relationship with other mental health professionals, social service agencies, schools, and community resources serving the Palatine area.
• Responsible for the coordination of an individual’s care with local hospitals and providers.
• Promptly follow-up with social service referrals and provide feedback to the referring officer if requested.
• Maintain thorough clinical paperwork of all cases worked.
• Responsible for completion of and meeting deadlines for all clinical paperwork for cases, including: Direct Service Notes, involuntary petitions, and other clinical paperwork.
• Coordinate, prepare and deliver public speaking engagements as scheduling permits.
• Perform any other such duties as directed by the Commander of Neighborhood Based Policing.

Education, Experience and Licenses:

• Must have a Master’s Degree from an accredited university in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology or similar field.
• Experience in working with individuals with mental health issues and criminal justice involvement is preferred.
• Applicants must be eligible for state licensure as a Social Worker from the State of Illinois.
