Position Details

The Village of Northbrook, Illinois (population 33,343), is a thriving, progressive community strategically located 25 miles north of Chicago. The Northbrook Police Department is recruiting a public safety dispatcher who will receive 911 emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatch Police response, monitor status of units and maintain related records. Duties also include operating LEADS, NCIC, and Village computer networks to retrieve law enforcement related information as needed. 

Dispatchers operate multi-faceted communications devices, Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), in-house computer systems, voice recording systems and Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD). Must have experience with computers and Windows operating systems.

Qualifications: 

• Candidates must be at least 21 years old and possess, or be able to obtain within the first year of employment, a current Law Enforcement Agency Data System (LEADS) certification.
• High school diploma or GED required and one to three years related communications or Police Department experience preferred.
• Must be skilled in keyboarding, exercise good judgment, and be able to maintain a high level of confidentiality in the performance of your duties.
• Candidates must multi-task efficiently and under pressure.

This is a public safety position and the unit is staffed twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. The work schedule will vary to include day and night hours, weekends, holidays, and extended hours in emergency, disaster, or other situations influenced by workload or staffing shortages.

Successful candidates must pass applicant testing including:

• Polygraph exam
• Psychological evaluation
• Background investigation
• Drug screening
• Hearing test 

Candidate must have a professional demeanor and sensitivity to maintain effective working relations with other employees and interact tactfully with the public to resolve situations that may involve high levels of stress, often in emergency circumstances.
