Position Details

The Dixon City Fire Department and the Dixon Rural Fire Protection District are now accepting applications for the position of Entry Level Firefighter.

Applicants will complete one application/test for both departments.

Testing is being conducted for an immediate need to hire and to establish an eligibility list for future hiring needs.

Located along the scenic Rock River in Northwestern Illinois, Dixon is a thriving community of almost 16,000, and serves as the county seat of Lee County.  At the hub of four major highways and one interstate, Dixon is the economic center of the county and an important focus for agriculture, industry, service, retail, recreation and residential growth.

You must meet the following minimum requirements:

• Citizenship:  Must be a U.S. Citizen
• Driver’s License:  Must possess a valid Driver’s License at the time of application with the ability to obtain an Illinois Driver’s License upon time of hire.
• Age Requirement:  Applicants must have obtained their 21st birthday by the last date for filing applications (12/20/23) and must be under the age of 35 years on day of testing 1/6/2024 unless exempt by State Statute 70 ILCS 705/116.006 and 65 IL 5/10 – 2. 1-6 which provides, in part, that the age limitation does not apply to any person previously employed as a certified full-time firefighter in a regularly constituted fire department of any municipality or fire protection district located in Illinois.
• Education:  Must have proof of High School Diploma, GED Certificate or High School Proficiency Statement.
• Residence:  Dixon City Fire Department – Fifteen (15) minute drive from the Dixon City Fire Department within one (1) year of hire. Dixon Rural Fire Protection District – Five (5) driving miles to the Station 1 (1020 Palmyra Street, Dixon, IL) within 90 days of hire.
• CPAT Card with Ladder Climb - NOTE: Candidates must possess a valid CPAT Card with Ladder Climb at the time of hire – cards considered valid if issued within one year prior to time of hire.

There is a $23.00 non-refundable application fee.  Applications are NOT available at the Dixon Fire Departments or City Hall.
