Telecommunicator

The City of Waukegan, Illinois invites candidates to test for the position of Telecommunicator (TC).

The Waukegan TC dispatches solely for the city of Waukegan police and fire services.

The TC receives emergent and non-emergent telephone inquiries and requests for Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Services.  The Communications Division is staffed 24/7 by 20 full-time, highly trained TCs.  

TCs work 8.5 hour days on a 5/2, 5/3 rotating schedule.

General Requirements:

Proficiency in a foreign language (Spanish) and/or previous experience in emergency services communications and/or the familiarity with radio records management and computer-aided dispatch systems is desired but not mandatory.

Selection Process:

• Immediate review of applicants will commence once test results are verified.    
• Candidates who pass the written exam will be invited to an oral board interview.  Finalists will be subject to a pre-employment police background check.  
• Upon hiring, new TCs will receive hands on training with a Certified Training Officer, EMD certification, LEADS certification and continuous training throughout the TC’s career. In addition, TCs will participate in ride-along programs with Waukegan police and fire as well as a sideline seat to observe operational training scenarios.
