Chief of Police

The Byron Police Department is a progressive law enforcement agency with an authorized strength of 7 full-time sworn officers, part-time sworn officers and 1 civilian employee. Officers and employees are dedicated to providing professional police services to the Byron community (population 3,784). Byron officers are some of the brightest, most qualified, and well-trained police officers in the area. The employees of this department are sincerely interested in providing the highest level of service possible to the community.

Due to the upcoming retirement of our current Chief of Police, the City of Byron is seeking a candidate to continue to lead the department's development and growth!

The City of Byron is seeking an innovative and collaborative professional with proven managerial, strong interpersonal, and customer service skills. Successful candidates must have an outgoing personality and be approachable and accessible to residents, business, and governmental leaders.

Qualifications:

• The successful candidate will have (10) years of experience in police work as a certified officer with a minimum of (5) years of supervisory experience at a senior command level or higher.
• A Bachelor's Degree is required, with Master's Degree preferred.
• In addition, advanced leadership training such as the FBI National Academy, Northwestern University's School of Police Staff and Command, Southern Police Institute's Administrative Officers Course, or similar programs is highly desired.
• Candidates must have a valid Illinois Driver's License and certification as a police officer from the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board or become certified within six months of appointment.

The Chief of Police oversees and directs all activities of the Police Department for the City of Byron.

Responsibilities include:

• strategic planning for the use of resources
• coordinating the activities of the department
• ensuring officers are properly trained, and that services provided and development plans are of the highest quality. 

The Chief of Police is expected to have:

• excellent financial/budgeting skills
• collective bargaining experience
• well developed computer and public speaking skills
• ability to multitask and make sound decisions under pressure 

The ideal candidate will possess quality leadership skills and be a person of high moral character that models integrity and professionalism at the highest level.

The Chief of Police is a member of the city's management team and shall be directly responsible to the City Administrator, along with the Mayor and the City Council. The individual appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council shall have up to (1) year to reside within twenty miles of Byron City Hall.

The City intends to fill this position via a search process conducted by the ILACP concluding with an early March 2024 appointment.
