Position Details

BARTLETT POLICE DEPARTMENT COMMUNITY SERVICE OFFICER

The Village of Bartlett currently has two openings for Community Service Officer (CSO) positions within the Police Department.

CSOs perform a wide variety of civilian field and office law enforcement work in direct support of sworn personnel, including:

• taking police reports
• conducting traffic investigations
• providing traffic control, parking enforcement, and animal control
• performing related technical duties as assigned 

The CSOs receive direct supervision from the CSO supervisor with general supervision from supervisory staff.

Duties performed within the job may require CSOs to:

• serve as a field or desk officer
• answer phones
• process requests for police reports and public information
• collect and log found property
• receive and record citizen complaints
• record data of stolen property
• assist with traffic collision reports
• request medical personnel and tow trucks
• write police reports
• assist with missing person cases
• receive and process abandoned vehicles
• monitor and enforce noncriminal village ordinances
• take statements
• participate in the apprehension and confinement of stray domestic animals and wildlife
• perform fingerprinting duties
• feed prisoners, schedule and coordinate vehicle maintenance involving all department vehicles
• respond to complaints from the public
• investigate potential violations and nuisances
• issue citations
• assist the public with lock outs to vehicles and residences
• inspect homes on the vacation watch list
• deploy radar trailers
• make court appearances as required
• perform records maintenance and crossing guard duties
• operate a department vehicle and radio
• attend training as required 

Candidates should have the ability to:

• interpret and apply federal, state, village and department laws, policies and procedures
• think and act quickly in emergency situations
• prepare accurate and grammatically correct reports
• operate a variety of office equipment, including a computer
• gain cooperation through discussion and persuasion
• deal with the public courteously and tactfully, understand and carry out oral and written directions
• communicate clearly and concisely
• maintain cooperative working relationships
• maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties 

Requirements include:

• High school diploma or GED
• Valid driver’s license
• Two years of previous related experience and/or supplemental education in criminal justice is highly preferred 

The CSO position is a non-union, non-exempt position. The rotating work schedule consists of four ten-hour shifts, including nights, holidays and weekends.
