Position Details

The City of Oak Forest Police Department is seeking applicants for the position of Emergency Telecommunicator.

This is an entry level position which performs communications, dispatching and related work for the City communications center.

The position: 

• Operates multi-frequency, two-way Fire, Police, Emergency Management Agency and Public Works radios, and monitors various alarm systems such as fire, burglar, 911 and hold-up alarms
• Dispatches officers to answer requests for assistance and receives and transmits information and messages
• Operates equipment to maintain contact with various personnel in dispatching rescue squads, other police departments, wrecker services, state police, and emergency management agency personnel
• Answers and transmits information for 911 emergency calls and answers the police non-emergency telephone number
• Reports to the Deputy Chief of Police

Illustrative Examples of Work:

Examples of work include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Receives and monitors communications of all types.
• Determines through inquires the details of emergencies or other incidents and dispatches proper units.
• Transmits such messages as may be needed in conducting operations at the point of emergency.
• Operates computer terminals for state, federal and local data systems to provide investigative information.
• Provides assistance for walk-in customers and performs Information Desk duties as required by directives.
• Records all information concerning calls and complaints.
• Performs a wide variety of clerical, computer and record duty tasks, and other duties, which may be assigned or required.
• Other duties as assigned 

Required Knowledge, Skill and Ability:

• Good knowledge of the geographical highway and street systems to which units are being dispatched
• The ability to communicate the English language verbally and in writing
• The ability to handle stressful situations
• The ability to remain constantly alert and to have skill in detecting the scope and magnitude of an emergency
• The ability to type twenty words per minute
• Requires a pleasant personality, good speaking voice, and the ability to deal with the public tactfully and firmly
• Requires good physical condition, and have normal hearing and seeing ability to be ascertained by a physical examination
• Requires having skill and a thorough working knowledge of computers and data processing systems
• Requires the ability to qualify as a certified Law Enforcement Agency Data Systems Operator, a Certified Emergency Medical Dispatcher, and complete any other required training as designated by the Department
