Position Details

Position Summary:

The Director of Safety and Security maintains a safe, secure, and nurturing school environment that provides staff with the ability to meet the academic, social, and emotional needs of all students. This individual evaluates district security practices, plans and implements all aspects of security and safety procedures and training, and oversees the District’s safety and security program. The safety and security coordinator serves as the law enforcement and fire service liaison for the school district.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or related field
  • Minimum of 10 years of law enforcement experience, preferably in a command position
  • Minimum of 4 years as a Student Resource Officer
  • NASRO Basic SRO course required, Advanced SRO course preferred
  • Proficient with PCs, tablets, and other mobile electronic devices
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google Apps and cloud-based applications
  • Demonstrated aptitude for the work to be performed
  • Demonstrated aptitude as a self-starter who works with minimal supervision
  • Effective problem solving skills
  • Effective interpersonal skills and written and oral communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong orientation toward providing customer service
  • Strong work ethic
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to work positively and productively with adults and high school age students

Essential Functions:

  • Plans, evaluates, coordinates, and supervises District security operations, equipment, procedures, and personnel.
  • Plans, directs, and conducts staff development programming for all areas of school safety based on regular needs assessments.
  • Collaborates with building and district leadership on safety and security personnel related matters.
  • Coordinates and maintains district REDI safety plan and collaborates with building and district leadership to maintain safety and security processes and procedures.
  • Conducts routine safety and security evaluations of existing district resources, personnel, and procedures.
  • Identifies potential security related issues and recommends changes to existing practices and policies as needed.
  • Ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local safety and security requirements.
  • Maintains open communication with other governmental agencies.
  • Prepares district communication related to safety and security for the Board, community, parents, students and staff in collaboration with the Director of Communications.
  • Collaborates with other district personnel to apply for and manage safety or security related grants.
  • Participates in various district committees including Building Leadership Team and Threat Assessment Team meetings, as needed.
  • Prepares security related reports and maintains security related records.
  • Collaborates with the assistant superintendent for business services to prepare budget estimates and miscellaneous financial reports.
  • Collaborates with the building managers, the maintenance department, and the technology department to order supplies as needed.
  • Coordinates recruitment, selection, transfers, promotion, discipline, and dismissal measures with personnel in the safety and security department in collaboration with the administration.
  • Prepares work schedules and assigns or delegates responsibilities.
  • Directs the daily work of those assigned to the safety and security department.
  • Participates in professional organizations related to safety and security and obtains additional training and education as necessary.
  • Completes tasks as assigned by the assistant superintendent or another district administrator

  • Ability to use electronic devices and commonly used software including student management and grade book software, finance software, Microsoft Office, Google Apps for Education, and other cloud-based software. Must have the capacity to learn and become proficient with new computer software as needed with minimal guidance.
