The Coal City Board of Fire and Police Commissioners are accepting applications to hire two (2) new officers and to establish an eligibility list for the Coal City Police Department.
The Coal City Police Officers are an essential part of the community and their presence whether on patrol or working in specialized assignments such as the school resource officer program, are aimed at ensuring a safe and peaceful community. The success of the Department depends on a strong partnership with the community they serve. All efforts are aimed at making Coal City a safer place for all to live, work and visit.

You must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Citizenship: Must be a Citizen of the United States or an individual who has permanent resident status and is legally authorized to work in the United States. Must under Federal Law, be authorized to obtain, carry, purchase, or otherwise possess a firearm.
- Driver’s License: Must possess a valid Driver’s License at the time of application with the ability to obtain an Illinois Driver’s License upon time of hire.
- Age Requirement: Applicants must have attained their 21st birthday by (6/26/24). Applicants must be under the age of 35 at the last date of filing applications (6/26/24) AND when the Initial Eligibility Register is posted unless they have been certified and employed as a Full-Time Police Officer in a regularly constituted police department for a municipality in the United States or are otherwise exempt by State Statute 65 IL 5/10-2.1.
- Education: Must have proof of High School Diploma, GED Certificate or High School Proficiency Statement.
- Residency: Applicants must live within 20 miles of the Coal City, IL Police Department or be willing to relocate within one year.
- Vision: Must have corrected vision to 20/20.
- Testing: Must be able to successfully complete a written test, an oral board interview, pass a background investigation, psychological and polygraph test, as well as a pre-employment medical and physical ability examination.
- Must possess a valid Illinois F.O.I.D. Card.

There is a $25.00 non-refundable application fee. Applications are not available at the Coal City Police Department or the Village Hall.
