  • Starting: $56,123 (Step 1 of our union contract)

    Top Salary: $78,156 (Step 7 of our union contract)

    Lateral hires may start at a higher step on the wage scale.

Orland Central Dispatch has one open full-time telecommunicator position.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Orland Central Dispatch telecommunicator position is responsible for dispatching emergency responders to incidents requiring fire and/or medical services. Telecommunicators must work quickly and efficiently under pressure. They require extensive training and familiarization with emergency medical services and fire call-taking and dispatching. Telecommunicators must exercise sound judgment and decision-making skills. They must work cooperatively with others and be great teammates. They must be friendly and demonstrate a desire to serve the public and our public safety responders. Telecommunicators use complex radio and 9-1-1 systems. They answer radio communications and telephone calls for emergent and non-emergency matters. In our center, telecommunicators are supervised directly by the Communications Shift Supervisors and Director.

HOURS OF WORK:

Full-time: As determined by the CBA (currently, 2190 hours each year, with staff working four consecutive 12-hour days followed by four days off).

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Telecommunicators must be of strong moral and ethical character. They must be great teammates. Orland Central Dispatch telecommunicators help maintain an emergency communications center culture where integrity and ethics are the norm.
  • Telecommunicators are consistently impartial, open, and straightforward. They conform to Orland Central Dispatch's written directives and practices.
  • Telecommunicators exclude personal biases from work performance. They display acceptable social and work behaviors. They maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Telecommunicators accept responsibility for their decisions and actions. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school
  • At least one (1) year of experience as a public safety telecommunicator

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Fire and EMS call taking and dispatch experience
  • Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) certification
  • CPR certification

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Answer calls by radio and telephone and dispatch responders as required
  • Provide instructions and information to callers and responders
  • Input calls for fire alarms, fire, fire prevention, and medical services
  • Disseminate information, transmit orders, and follow instructions as required
  • Monitor fire alarms and required radio frequencies
  • Transmit responder safety and hazardous conditions information
  • Handle all MABAS alarms for Division 19, and Divisions 22 and 24 as needed
  • Operate all emergency communications center equipment
  • Type, file, and perform clerical duties as required
  • Obtain and maintain Emergency Medical Dispatcher certification and licensure
  • Obtain and maintain CPR certification
  • Complete monthly continuing education
  • Maintain as confidential all department information
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, fellow employees, other emergency communications staff, public officials, and the public
  • Handle pressure and remain calm in emergencies
