The following is intended to serve only as a general summary of the Village’s Firefighter hiring process:

At the time of testing all individuals interested in becoming a Firefighter must meet the following requirements:

• Pay a $35.00 non-refundable application fee
• Minimum 20 years of age and under 35 years of age, unless previous full-time Firefighter in Illinois, as noted under state statute (65 ILCS 5/10-2.1-6.3), at the time of the written examination
• U.S. citizen or legally authorized to work in the U.S.
• High School Diploma or GED and at least one of the following:  
• Minimum sixty (60) college semester hours OR
• State of Illinois Firefighter II Certification OR
• Two (2) years of active military service with an Honorable Discharge by the time of the written examination
• Possess a valid Driver’s License
• Proof of completion of Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) and proof of passing the Ladder Climb Test, with attainment date within one (1) year of receiving a conditional offer of employment. Information regarding CPAT and obtaining certification can be obtained by visiting one of the following:

• Note:  In case of demonstrated financial hardship, accommodations can be made regarding the CPAT testing fee.  Contact the Village’s Human Resources Office for details
• Have correctable vision to 20/20 and have the ability to distinguish colors
• Within 12 months from hire, reside in Lake, Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Will, or McHenry counties in Illinois, Kenosha County in Wisconsin, or Lake County in Indiana
• Enter into an “Authorization for Release of Personal Information Agreement”, an “Abstinence from Tobacco Products Agreement”, a “Candidate Reimbursement Agreement”, and an “Employment of Relatives Agreement”
• NOTE: Applicants with relatives who are currently employed with the Village will not be eligible for hire – please contact IOS Recruitment for details
• NOTE: Applicants who have failed to pass any component of the selection process shall not be reexamined within six (6) months from the date of such failure – please contact IOS Recruitment for details
• Must have ability to understand the English Language, written and spoken
• Tattoos (temporary or permanent) shall not be worn visibly on the hands, neck, or head
