Position Details

Job Summary:

This class involves law enforcement work protecting the public and preserving the peace while serving in a variety of assignments within the Sheriff's Office. The work involves responsibility for carrying out assigned duties in the areas of road patrol, criminal and special investigations, traffic enforcement, community policing, and problem solving in assigned areas. Deputies interpret and enforce all applicable State and local laws, ordinances and statutes, general orders, special instructions as well as policies and procedures of the Sheriff's Office. Unusual situations and serious matters are referred to supervisors for action or guidance. Work is performed under the supervision of a Law Enforcement Corporal limited to those of Administrative in nature, and under a Law Enforcement Sergeant for results and adherence to law enforcement operating procedures. This position is considered essential under the CCSO Emergency Plan.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Conducts investigations of complaints, accidents or calls for assistance and interviews witnesses and others regarding criminal activities.
  • Makes arrests ensuring that all appropriate paperwork is complete and accurate and that proper procedures have been followed.
  • Assists motorists, enforce traffic laws, issue citations, and make arrests as necessary.
  • Responds to emergencies, assess situations, and call for necessary assistance.
  • Fills out forms and keeps records of all activities in accordance with established policy and procedure.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned Locates, preserves, documents, collects, and packages evidence found at crime scenes.
  • Prepares criminal investigation case packages for submission to the State Attorney's Office.
  • Enforces traffic laws; operates radar equipment, issues warnings, citations, and administers field sobriety or other tests.
  • Serves civil and criminal process papers.
  • Conducts surveillance at various locations to prevent and detect criminal activity.
  • Assists in community policing efforts for the assigned area.
  • Operates a patrol car to prevent and/or detect or deter violations of the law. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of law enforcement procedures relative to interpretation and enforcement of applicable federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
  • Ability to employ defensive tactics (handcuffing suspects, arresting, and detaining suspects, struggling with suspects or hostile people).
  • Ability to employ first responder techniques.
  • Ability to operate in a safe manner a motor vehicle during the day and evening hours.
  • Knowledge of community policing and problem-solving techniques.
  • Ability to operate all equipment listed in the EQUIPMENT USED section, unless specifically exempted.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Knowledge and ability to maintain their uniforms and equipment in a neat and serviceable condition and will, by their appearance, set an example of neatness and strict conformity with agency policy and general orders.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with supervisors and establish cohesive, effective relationships with peers (i.e., teamwork abilities), ability and willingness to maintain dependable work habits such as reporting to work on time.
  • Knowledge of crime prevention techniques and the rules of evidence.
  • Knowledge of the use of the technical equipment related to the work, including firearms, vehicles, and communication equipment.
  • Knowledge of the policies, rules, regulations, and procedures governing law enforcement operations within the Sheriff's Office.
  • Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations, to assess situations and act decisively to ensure appropriate response to emergencies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement communications and record keeping procedures.
  • Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public.
  • Ability to demonstrate service weapon and shotgun firing and maintain weapons proficiency.
  • Ability to keep accurate and complete records and prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Ability to enforce the law impartially and with proper regard for the legal procedures and safeguards governing the work. 

Education or Equivalent Experience Required:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Prefer two (2) year degree or currently enrolled.
  • Completion of State approved training and certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in compliance with the requirements of the State of Florida.
  • Annually pass the physical abilities test of a certified officer through term of appointment.
  • Internal candidates must not be on any disciplinary or performance (PIP) probation.

  • Eye-Hand Coordination – the ability to respond with the use of the hands to visual stimuli (reacting to a punch thrown, subduing a suspect with controlled and directed movements).

    • Vision – the ability to see.
    • Smell – the ability to smell and distinguish odors.
  • Environmental Tolerance – the ability to tolerate hot environments. 

Physical Effort Required:

  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of standing, walking, hearing, and kneeling, reaching, feeling, grasping, pushing, pulling, bending, climbing, crawling, fingering, and performing repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to perform work pushing/pulling/grappling of persons or objects up to 150 pounds of force occasionally: 20 pounds frequently (uniform vest, belt): and 10 pounds constantly.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to operate an office assigned vehicle and distinguish details and differences when observing people, places, or things on patrol 24/7. (Sunrise, day, sunset, night hour driving)
  • Must be physically fit to pass annual Physical Agility Test. 

Working Conditions:

Officer is required to work shift work including weekends, holidays, and overtime in a 24-hour operation, and must be able to work at any time his/her services are needed. Whether on or off duty, officer is expected to be armed and to exercise his/her arrest authority whenever necessary.
