Position Details

Duties:

• Work involves responsibility for a variety of law enforcement and general support activities related to the programs and operations of the Buffalo Grove Police Department.
• Responsible for the enforcement of Village ordinances and State laws in designated areas of environmental health, nuisance and animal control, signage and vehicle and parking regulations, and the investigation of minor traffic accidents and public service/criminal incidents.
• Includes responsibility for a variety of clerical, communications, and public contact work performed at the front desk/reception area of the Police Department.
• Involves considerable public contact, often under difficult circumstances.
• Recurring work assignments are performed with considerable independence and much of the work is self-initiated.
• Work is performed under the general supervision of the Police Sergeant, who reviews work through conferences and reports for results obtained.
• Perform related duties as assigned or required. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Graduation from high school; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:
• Knowledge of the street layout and geography of the Village.
• Knowledge of applicable Village ordinances, laws, and regulations.
• Knowledge of the principles involved in the operation of radio, telephone and related communications equipment.
• Knowledge of the care and handling requirements of a variety of animals.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule based on departmental needs.
• Ability to interpret and apply applicable ordinances and regulations uniformly and impartially.
• Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
• Ability to deal tactfully and firmly with animal owners, complainants and the general public.
• Ability to maintain required records, prepare reports, and perform limited typewriting.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
• Ability to operate radio and telephone equipment quickly and accurately under heavy load conditions.
• Ability to speak clearly and concisely in a well-modulated voice and to use good diction.
• Ability to think and act quickly, calmly and accurately in emergency situations.
• Follows safety policies and procedures.
• Reports all unsafe conditions and acts to supervisor.
• Reports all accidents to supervisor immediately.
• Follows recognized safe work practices.
