Position Details

The City of Watseka is accepting applications for the position of Police Chief.

The new Police Chief will be responsible for a department with an authorized force of 12 full-time officers. The population of the City of Watseka is 4,600.  Officers are assigned a vehicle with the latest in equipment and technology. The department has a budget of around $1.5 million per year to include facilities, equipment, and personnel. The current chief is retiring and this is an excellent opportunity to become a leader in the community and help the department grow and progress. The new police chief will not only handle the day-to-day administrative duties, but will also be active in the field providing support to their officers and other law enforcement agencies in the area. The new police chief is expected to be a pillar in the community and set and follow a high standard for the department and officers they will oversee.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have the following education, skills, and experience:

• Associate's degree or higher in law enforcement or related field.
• At least ten years law enforcement experience
• Five years increasingly responsible managerial experience in law enforcement work.
• ILTESB Certified or ability to obtain prior to appointment to the position.
• Valid Illinois Driver’s License upon appointment.
• No felony conviction (Note: a misdemeanor or serious traffic offense may also disqualify applicants from further consideration)
• Application Period will begin on Tuesday, October 1st, 2024, and end at 5pm Central Time on Tuesday, October 29th, 2024. The application period may be extended as needed.
• The top candidates who best fit the position profile will participate in interviews/testing the week of November 18th. (date subject to change)
• Recommendation presented to the Watseka City Mayor in early December.
• Final interview, background checks and other requirements as determined by the City of Watseka.
