PROFESSIONAL ANNOUNCEMENT

GovHR USA LLC is pleased to announce that the City of Evansville, Wisconsin, resident population of approximately 5,500, seeks experienced police leaders as applicants to serve as this community’s next Chief of Police.

Evansville is located in south central Wisconsin approximately 20 miles south of the Madison Wisconsin metropolitan area.  The Mayor and City Council delegate day to day operations and management to the City Administrator. The Chief of Police is appointed by the Police Commission and reports to the City Administrator for day to day operations.

The Evansville Police Department is staffed by eight (8) full-time sworn police officers, four part-time sworn police officers and two (2) secretaries one full-time and one part-time.   Police Headquarters is located at 10 West Church Street in Evansville. The department is a full service 24/7 organization. The Wisconsin Professional Police Association (WPPA) is the officers’ collective bargaining representative.

The Ideal Candidate:

The City is seeking an innovative and collaborative professional with proven managerial and leadership experience, as well as strong interpersonal and customer service skills.

The ideal professional background and qualifications for the Chief of Police position include:

  • Will have a minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible sworn law enforcement experience.
  • Will have formal leadership experience in a law enforcement agency at the rank of Sergeant or higher. 
  • Will have a reputation as a leader with a high level of honesty and integrity.
  • Knowledge of accepted principles and practices of police administration and human resources management.
  • Knowledge of collective bargaining and employee relations.
  • Be able to demonstrate excellent problem solving skills.
  • Be able to foster an inclusive workplace where diversity is valued and leveraged to achieve the vision and mission of the organization. 
  • Candidates must be committed to training, professional development and community engagement, as well as embracing the benefits and techniques of community policing.  
  • Should have a history of intergovernmental cooperation and relationship building.  
  • Should have experience interacting and collaborating with other law enforcement agencies and mutual aid groups.
  • Must be knowledgeable of current best practices and policies in policing, and ensure consistency in the application of those policies.
  • Is expected to have excellent organizational management skills and a clear understanding of resource and budgetary allocations. 
  • Will possess well-developed written and public speaking skills.

Successful candidates will a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a focus on criminal justice, public administration, business administration or related fields.  A master’s degree is desirable.  A combination of education, training and experience may be substituted to meet the equivalent of this requirement.

Leadership training such as the F.B.I. National Academy, Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command or similar programs is also desirable.  Candidates must possess a State of Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board Law Enforcement Certification or be able to be certified within six months of hire.
