Property & Evidence Technician

Position Summary:

Responsible for proper inventory, custody, security, storage and disposition of police evidence.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following: 

  • Maintains evidence (found and abandoned) and responsible for safekeeping property to ensure that individual items are secure from theft, loss, or contamination, and can be located in an efficient manner.
  • Maintains property inventory reports with property chain of custody and notations of any and all actions associated with the property.
  • Delivers, or arranges for delivery of, evidence to state and federal labs for testing or analysis as appropriate.
  • Monitors status of evidence and property in custody, transferred temporarily for laboratory testing or analysis, and court presentation.
  • Ensures the timely and legally correct notification of owners and the release/disposal of property recovered, found, or seized by the department.
  • Compiles lists of property to be submitted to appropriate authority for an order of disposal.
  • Coordinates the disposal of unclaimed property and special disposal of narcotics, explosives, biological specimens, biohazard materials and firearms.
  • Performs case disposition research and enter and retrieve data regarding the classification and disposition of property items.
  • Monitors and replenishes as necessary all property control supplies, packaging materials and biohazard personal protection equipment.
  • Maintains all property storage facilities in a clean, orderly and efficient manner.
  • Assists with forfeiture cases; prepares items for auctions.
  • Prepares evidence for court to include copying of all audio and visual evidence.
  • Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with the public and staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.
  • Performance of additional administrative or community service-related tasks as assigned. 

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • State and federal laws and regulations related to evidence and property management.
  • Computerized inventory systems.
  • Proper methods and procedures for receiving and storing evidence and property.
  • Proper handling of weapons and biohazard materials.
  • Law enforcement record keeping procedures and requirements as related to evidence and property management.
  • Standard office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment.
  • Correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Computer applications related to the work.
  • Techniques for working collaboratively with a variety of individuals, at all levels of responsibility, often where relations may be confrontational or strained.
  • Communicating effectively in oral and written forms.
  • Coordinating and maintaining a large inventory of evidence.
  • Interpreting, applying and explaining applicable laws, codes and regulations.
  • Maintaining accurate records and preparing accurate and timely reports.
  • Making accurate arithmetic calculations.
  • Proper handling and disposal of biohazards.
  • Working without close supervision in standard work situations.
  • Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities.
  • Preparing clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written materials.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with staff, coworkers, and the public.
  • Problem-solving abilities and effective communications skills with supervisors and coworkers. 

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma/GED; AND
  • Two (2) years of property control that includes property custodian, evidence technician, or working with evidence handling; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources
